To support this focus area, Amazon is seeking an experienced WHS Senior Safety Design and Engineering Manager to play a critical role to ensure high standards of safety are built into systems and processes across new and legacy Fulfilment Centres, Sort Centres and Delivery Stations across Europe.
The successful candidate will serve as the lead safety expert for projects, providing comprehensive technical guidance, guiding procurement and facilitating design processes to ensure compliance, lead proactive safety initiatives through and develop and implement comprehensive safety programs. The role will be filled by an experienced Senior Safety Design and Engineering Manager with detailed technical knowledge of EU safety regulations and best practice engineering and procedural controls to reduce risk to operators and maintainers. Emphasis will be on technical knowledge and the ability to engage with cross functional teams, transforming this knowledge into sound, compliant processes. They must demonstrate the ability to comprehend and apply technical documents, requirements and solutions, using data and metrics to determine and drive improvements. This team member should be an effective communicator and send clear, concise and consistent messages, both verbally and in writing. They will be required to possess strong safety and relevant environmental and ergonomic knowledge and to demonstrate this expertise when working with increasing responsibilities in safety and/or environmental programs in manufacturing, production, engineering/facilities or service operations along with Engineering, Design, Construction, Startup and Operations teams. Location: Mix of site and office work. The role will require frequent travel up to approx. 60% - 70% of the time. For this reason, a driving license with experience in UK and Continental Europe is highly desirable.
Key job responsibilities
You will be supporting a wide range of projects being heavily involved in the process, including liaison with other critical support functions such as Engineering, Reliability and Maintenance Engineering, Operations, Procurement, and New Build/Real Estate teams in order to effectively deliver the required right first-time systems safety standards. This is an important safety role and will report to the Sr. Mgr. WHS Design & Startup (Europe).
The extent of your duties will include:
- Define new and update existing technical standards for and process controls, working closely with EU internal experts.
- Generate regular technical updates for the Safety Engineering team on latest safety regulations, standards (ISO, IEC, EN) and emerging technologies to keep the team current with compliance requirements and best practices.
- Look for industry innovation for new, safer risk reduction measures as well as inspection techniques, tools and opportunities for improving performance and reducing impact to stakeholders in terms of time and cost.
- Be the leading WHS technical voice, during projects development to ensure compliance with Amazon standards and regulatory requirements. This includes leading safety technical reviews and risk assessments for all new equipment systems.
- Support Amazon facilities by performing suitable and sufficient risk assessments of all relevant new projects, mentoring and developing other team members whilst doing so.
- Conduct site WHS assessments to ensure all applicable requirements are considered into installation. Create punch lists items using Amazon tools and effectively review corrective measures with relevant teams to ensure mitigation is completed to reduce all risk to an acceptable level.
- Keep tracking data up to date for the inspection program.
- Provide functional working links with other critical functional teams including; Engineering, Reliability and Maintenance Engineering, Procurement, Operations, New Build Safety and Real Estate teams.
- Support procurement processes as well as building design, specification and launch processes to ensure ‘right first time’ safety outcomes.
- Provide monthly reports on upcoming projects and current in process schemes with clear analytical measures of status and risk.
- Support the development of solutions that meet Amazon high standards for safety, risk reduction, customer satisfaction, efficiency, scalability, simplicity, and operational excellence.
- Instruct and train company personnel on safety policies, assisting the teams in incorporating our safety standards at their respective sites.
- Provide awareness and targeted training on building, systems or machinery safety / engineering risk reduction to stakeholders to influence strategic decision making as well as day-to-day operational decisions.
- Support business change through effective influencing of change management processes within international operations. And provide expert input to change projects, build outs and development projects and act as a technical expert for the EU WHS team.
- Support the delivery of central Health and Safety pro-active objectives.
- Escalate significant concerns and lessons learned identified during inspections and subsequent site visits.
- Plan and arrange own travel applying frugality and efficiency of time on sites.
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Health and Safety, Safety Engineering, or related fields
- Basic Knowledge of Machine Design Standards and Conveyance Standard (i.e. EN 619 and Machinery Directive, Low Voltage Directive)
- Experience in Safety, RME, Engineering, Quality or Operations.
- Experience in program implementation or overseeing authorized workers in the following programs: Fall Hazard Control, Electrical Safe Work, Hazardous Energy Control (LOTO), Conveyors and Machine Safeguarding, Confined Spaces, Hot Work and System Impairment, Fire Protection Systems, PIT and aerial lifts, Cranes, Hoisting and Rigging.
- Experience in program or project management
- Experience using data and metrics to determine and drive improvements
- Experience owning program strategy, end to end delivery, and communicating results to senior leadership
- Master’s degree
- Have or working towards ASP, CSP, CIH, NEBOSH, or CHMM certification
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements and the ISO 45000 and ISO 45001 standard
- Knowledge on: Machine safety principles; steps to CE-marking with machine risk assessment and documentation required, Risk reduction and standards, Functional safety (Performance Level - PL)
- Experiencing in deploying automated reporting systems
- Six Sigma Belt or Green Belt certified.
- Analytical skills with demonstrated problem solving ability
- Experience in technical, standards or program writing
It is desirable that they will also have technical knowledge of EU machinery safety standards and regulations, robotics and automated conveyors to meet all European country’s requirements and lead procurement and implementation of systems across the network.

About the team
RME WHS is part of the High-Risk Operations (HRO) family, working under the mantra: “Safe to Operate. Operate Safely.” We enable and equip our partners to manage the highest safety risks to Amazon Associates, particularly those arising from operating and maintaining machinery and equipment, as well as managing contractors supporting our operations.
As the RME WHS Team, we focus on risks in RME activities but take an end-to-end approach, ensuring all risk reduction opportunities are pursued in line with the risk control hierarchy. Beyond compliance, we influence safe behaviours by analysing human factors and fostering a positive safety culture through engagement initiatives. A core part of our role is examining KPIs, incidents, and events, conducting root cause analysis to ensure lessons learned are adopted. Where applicable, we use these insights to shape safety interventions and proactively mitigate risks. We support RME teams by maintaining a robust suite of policies, standards, procedures, and specifications, enacted through competent, trained individuals and continuously improved through targeted bar-raising programs. Through collaboration, proactive risk management, and a commitment to high safety standards, the RME WHS Team plays a critical role in ensuring Amazon’s operational safety remains world-class.
