Job Description:
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and practicing Senior Scientist / Engineer.
We now work in a hybrid mode, combining remote and office work. We aim to offer a great work-life balance, with flexible options available where feasible.
You will join a team at an exciting time: maintaining the UK's National Time Scale, UTC (NPL), and developing systems to underpin Critical National Infrastructure. This work addresses risks related to dependency on global navigation satellite systems like GPS, which are vulnerable to natural and intentional interference.
Role Details
As a Senior Scientist / Engineer, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team developing new Time and Frequency infrastructure within the UK. Your role involves creating robust ground- and satellite-based Time and Frequency dissemination systems based on Atomic Clocks at various UK sites.
Your responsibilities include:
- Testing and implementing satellite communication, optical fibre, and GNSS-based time and frequency transfer systems
- Designing and developing hardware and software for these systems
- Innovating new time dissemination solutions to support UK sovereignty and industry
- Collaborating across teams and with external stakeholders to meet project goals
This role offers opportunities to partner with external organizations and operate across multiple UK sites.
About You
We value diversity and encourage applications from underrepresented groups in STEM, including women, disabled, Black, Asian, and minority ethnic candidates.
You will report to a Principal Scientist and play a key role in designing critical UK infrastructure, pushing measurement accuracy boundaries for the UK's new resilient Time Scale.
To succeed, you should have:
- Experience in Time and Frequency measurement and Time scales
- A relevant degree in Science or Engineering
- Experience in Systems Engineering processes, including requirements, design, and implementation
- Team management skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Good customer-facing skills
- A rigorous problem-solving approach
Additional advantageous skills include postgraduate degrees in related fields, experience with satellite navigation systems, software engineering (Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB), practical knowledge of SATCOM, optical fibre, GNSS systems, and experience in real-time hardware monitoring and control.
Note: To work at NPL, security clearance (BPSS) is required, and nationality/residency criteria may apply based on security requirements.
