Job Description

We are looking to recruit an adaptable User‑Centred Design Consultant who can work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and deliver excellent results across GDS projects for Version 1’s customers in the public sector.

You will be experienced in working with users and stakeholders to determine the best way to design products and services, considering both the end‑to‑end journey and individual design elements. Your portfolio will demonstrate your ability to understand users and design to meet their needs, work to relevant design standards, and communicate your design decisions effectively.

You will play a key role in designing the end‑to‑end journey of service. This helps a user complete their goal and customer delivery of their policy intent. In this role, your work may involve the creation of, or change to, transactions, products and content across both digital and offline channels provided by different parts of the customer's internal infrastructure.

Eligibility: You need to be eligible for SC clearance to be considered for this role.

Qualifications

Design Thinking and Evidence‑Based Design

  • Strong understanding of design thinking and ability to apply frameworks and approaches as appropriate.
  • Evidence‑based approach to design; test assumptions to ensure designs are the simplest feasible approach.

Concepts and Prototyping

  • Create and iterate a variety of prototypes, selecting the appropriate level of fidelity and tools.
  • Evaluate concepts and prototypes, explain them to stakeholders and team members.
  • Apply design patterns and participate in wider design community discussion and activities.

Accessibility / Inclusive Design

  • Understand key principles and ability to apply them appropriately in designs.
  • Evaluate designs against appropriate accessibility standards.

Design Standards

  • Understand common design standards and demonstrate compliance with sector‑specific standards.
  • Awareness of public‑sector design standards and GDS assessment processes.

Focus on Users

  • Undertake basic user research activity and collaborate with researchers to understand users and test designs.
  • Design to meet a wide range of user needs; explain design decisions and constraints.

Consultancy Skills

  • Communicate design process and decisions effectively to gain confidence of internal colleagues and customers.
  • Manage stakeholders appropriately, know when to seek support and how to unblock design work.

Agile Working in Multidisciplinary Teams

  • Align user‑centred design practice with agile workflows across all stages of development.
  • Work in an open, iterative and collaborative way in a multidisciplinary team.
