Senior Software Engineer II (Full Stack)
Location: London Office / Hybrid (3 days a week working from home)
Reporting to: Engineering Manager – Customer domain
Role
As a Senior Full Stack Engineer, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality, customer-facing software and services that power the customer experience at Rightmove. While the focus of the role is front-end engineering (70% React, Typescript), you will also contribute to the design and development of our backend services (30% Java, Spring Boot, Kafka), ensuring seamless end-to-end delivery.
You’ll work in an autonomous cross-functional team of engineers, designers, and product managers, building features that scale to millions of users and thousands of agents. You’ll take ownership of technical decisions, mentor others, and help evolve our engineering practices with a modern mindset.
Responsibilities
- Designing, developing, and improving front-end applications with React, Typescript, and Node/Express.
- Contributing to backend development using Java 17+, Spring Boot, and Kafka to support new features and integrations.
- Collaborating with designers, product managers, and engineers to solve complex problems and deliver impactful features.
- Leading technical discussions and architectural design alongside Principal Engineers and Architects.
- Taking ownership of end-to-end delivery, balancing feature work with technical debt and long-term maintainability.
- Writing secure, well-tested, performant code, with a strong emphasis on TDD and automated testing.
- Monitoring, analysing, and improving application performance and user behaviour across front-end and back-end.
- Mentoring and coaching less experienced engineers, fostering knowledge sharing and growth within the team.
- Contributing to wider engineering forums and initiatives across Rightmove.
What we’re looking for
- Strong expertise in front-end technologies: React, Typescript, modern CSS/HTML, and testing frameworks such as jest/vitest and React Testing Library.
- Experience with backend technologies such as Java 17+, Spring Boot, and Kafka, or similar.
- Partners closely with Product (roadmap shaping, technical discovery, spike work).
- Future-facing technical direction (architectural decisions, scaling, de risking).
- Experience in cloud (preferably GCP).
- Enjoys working across the full stack, even if their core strength is in the front-end.
- Passionate about writing high-quality, maintainable, and testable code.
- Understanding of microservices, REST APIs, and event-driven systems.
- Interested in system performance, scalability, and user interaction.
- Curious and proactive in adopting new technologies and practices.
- Experience mentoring others and contributing to team growth.
- Thrives in a collaborative, agile environment, and takes ownership of delivery outcomes.
Tech you’ll work with
- Frontend: React, Typescript, Node.js, Express, Jest, React Testing Library
- Backend: Java 17+, Spring Boot, Kafka, SQL, Couchbase, Elasticsearch, Cockroach, Liquibase, Oracle DB
- Infrastructure & Tools: Kubernetes, Docker, GitLab, Gradle
