DWP. Digital with Purpose. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our community of tech experts in DWP Digital.
We're using fresh ideas and leading-edge tech to build and maintain digital solutions that will be used by nearly every person in the UK, every day and at key moments in their lives. DWP is the UK's largest government department. We help people into work and make payments worth over £195bn a year to support and empower millions of people. The scale of what we do is extraordinary, and our purpose is unique. We'd love you to join us.
What skills, knowledge and experience will you need?
- Full-Stack Development: Strong experience in designing, building, and deploying end-to-end software solutions using modern languages and frameworks such as Java, Python, Node.js, and React.
- Cloud & DevOps Expertise: Proficiency in cloud platforms like AWS and Azure, along with tools such as Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code technologies like Terraform.
- Technical Leadership: Ability to lead engineering teams, set technical direction, and mentor junior developers while promoting best practices and continuous improvement.
- Collaboration & Communication: Skilled in working with cross-functional teams including Product Owners, Architects, Designers, and Testers to deliver user-focused, policy-aligned solutions.
- Problem Solving & Modernisation: Capable of analysing complex systems, modernising legacy applications, and ensuring service continuity through effective incident and problem management.
Delivery. Work. Projects. In this role, you'll lead the design, development, and deployment of high-quality, cloud-native software solutions using platforms like AWS and Azure, and technologies such as Kubernetes, Java, Python, and CI/CD pipelines. You'll also play a key role in application modernisation, system integration, and ensuring service reliability, while championing best practices in engineering and accessibility. You'll use your expertise across multiple programming languages and modern technologies to help build and modernise the systems that power the UK's largest government department. From HR and finance to security and compliance, your work will support the tools 100,000+ colleagues rely on every day to deliver vital services to millions. You’ll work in a collaborative, agile environment alongside engineers, architects, and product teams. With a strong focus on continuous improvement, mentoring, and innovation, you'll help shape the future of digital services across the Civil Service. Join us to make a real impact and build something that matters. The position requires Security Check clearance - you'll be working on impactful projects that touch and help millions of people.
