Senior UI Designer – In‑Store Tills – Customer

We’re looking for a passionate, skilled and bold Senior UI Designer to join our multidisciplinary team! As a Senior UI Designer at the UK’s largest supermarket, you’ll be crafting experiences that help millions of people shop better, discovering new opportunities and creating intuitive, effective solutions that improve every stage of a customer’s shopping journey. You’ll balance business objectives with user expectations, crafting design solutions that exceed both, and you’ll know how to fail fast, get back up, and try again.

Responsibilities

  • Design the UI for large and small multi‑platform projects from start to finish, redefining complicated experiences into simple and intuitive UI solutions.
  • Own all end‑to‑end UI process activities including interaction design discovery, identifying trends and critically analysing their viability, sketching, wire‑framing, prototyping and delivering ready‑for‑build design files.
  • Collaborate closely with UX designers, researchers, UX writers, engineers, product managers, data analysts and business partners to explore, build, and deliver designs.
  • Champion human‑centred design inside and outside of your team.
  • Work within and across agile squads to design, develop and improve the customer experience across our digital products.
  • Partner with UX researchers to help the team develop empathy for customers, including those with a disability, and advocate for their needs, validating designs via A/B testing, un‑moderated user testing, and other methods.
  • Work closely with engineering teams to understand the feasibility of design ideas and ensure review of implementation at key stages of the development cycle.
  • Partner with the analytics team to advise work and decisions.
  • Facilitate workshops, run appropriate conceptualisation and participatory design sessions.
  • Promote inclusive design practices and deliver accessible designs.
  • Deliver valuable, high‑quality, and consistent work without sacrificing speed by using our Digital Design System and its standardised foundations, components and patterns.
  • Collaborate with the design system team to help evolve our Digital Design System based on user needs.
  • Help other disciplines understand the value design can bring to projects to build the best products.
  • Continuously seek to improve design processes inside and outside your team to gain efficiency, remove obstacles, and simplify workflows.
  • Provide feedback to other designers to help strengthen your team and Tesco as a whole.
  • Help your teammates build expertise, strong decision‑making skills, and empathy for customers.
  • Embrace opportunities to line‑manage other designers and help with their learning and development.
  • Work with the Design Manager to cultivate a positive, supportive, and inclusive team culture.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of UI design experience.
  • Exceptional UI design skills, including interaction design.
  • A strong, well‑curated portfolio demonstrating expertise across web, responsive, and native apps.
  • Strong experience in high‑profile design projects in a customer‑facing commercial environment.
  • High proficiency with the latest versions of Figma.
  • Good knowledge of the latest design and prototyping tools and technologies.
  • Proficiency in designing with accessibility in mind, meeting WCAG 2.1 Level AA.
  • Strong understanding of the end‑to‑end iterative design process.
  • Passion for solving problems while balancing all facets of a user experience.
  • Experience collaborating closely with multiple fields, including product and engineering.
  • Self‑motivation and good organisational and time‑management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to present to all levels of seniority and subject‑area experts within the organisation.
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and set standards for ways of working for more junior team members.
  • Proficiency with industry design and collaboration tools such as Miro.
  • Previous experience in the retail sector is an advantage.

Benefits

  • Annual bonus scheme of up to 20% of base salary.
  • Holiday starting at 25 days plus a personal day (plus bank holidays).
  • Private medical insurance.
  • 26 weeks maternity and adoption leave (after 1 year’s service) at full pay, followed by 13 weeks of Statutory Maternity Pay or Statutory Adoption Pay; 6 weeks fully paid paternity leave.
  • Free 24/7 virtual GP service, Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) for you and your family, and free access to a range of experts to support your mental wellbeing.
