Principal Geotechnical Engineer
Location: Bristol or Cardiff | Permanent | Full‑time | Hybrid working (3 days in office)
The Role
You’ll take responsibility for specifying, managing, and interpreting ground investigations, delivering geotechnical assessments, and developing design solutions for a variety of infrastructure and building projects. The work is varied – some commissions are standalone ground engineering projects, while others form part of wider civil and structural design schemes.
Typical Responsibilities
- Preparing and reviewing geotechnical reports and assessments
- Conducting proof‑of‑concept checks, slope stability, and settlement analyses
- Designing foundations, cuttings, embankments, and retaining structures
- Developing earthworks specifications and mitigation measures for legacy mining sites
- Contributing to Geotechnical Design Reports and feedback in line with CD622
About You
- Degree in Civil Engineering or Geology with a postgraduate qualification in Geotechnical Engineering
- Chartered status (CEng or equivalent)
- Strong technical understanding of EC7 and UK design codes
- Proficient in geotechnical software (Rocscience and Geo5)
- Experience preparing drawings (ArcGIS and CAD desirable)
- Excellent communication and report‑writing skills
- Confident managing client relationships and leading design delivery
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel when required
