Overview

Hydrologist - Senior/Principal (WINEP and Water Resources) at WSP. This role leads and contributes to Water Industry Natural Environment Programme (WINEP) and Water Resources Management Plan (WRMP) projects across the UK within the Sustainable Water Management team.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to and lead hydrology, water management elements of WINEP investigations and WRMP inputs in recent AMP cycles.
  • Develop rainfall–runoff models (e.g., GR6J) with knowledge of model calibration techniques; support broader hydrology approaches for water resources in England and Wales (e.g., flow naturalisation, reservoir mass balance).
  • Familiarity with demand management and water resources modelling approaches (e.g., Aquator, PyWR, MISER).
  • Understand UK water resources management regulations (Water Resources Planning Guidelines, WINEP guidance such as Preventing Deterioration and Environmental Destination).
  • Assess climate change resilience using UKCP18 data and related products.
  • Supervise small hydrology teams; mentor and develop junior colleagues with potential for formal People Management.
  • Produce high-quality client and regulator-facing deliverables with attention to detail and quality assurance.
  • Programming experience (e.g., Python and/or R) is advantageous; contribute to developing these skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication for concise reports; collaborate across sectors to deliver hydrological components of diverse projects.

Qualifications & Skills

  • A water-focused MSc (e.g., hydrology & water resources, sustainable water management) and a BSc in related subjects (e.g., physical geography, earth sciences, geology, civil engineering).
  • Either gained or working towards chartership with a relevant professional body.
