Senior/Principal Mechanical Design Engineer - RAS
Our marine business offers an excellent opportunity for a Senior or Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (depending on experience) to join the RAS/FAS Value Stream team at our offices in Gateshead, UK.
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be part of the Marine industry's leading edge, utilizing your skills and experience in an environment where excellence is paramount.
This role involves working as part of a multidisciplinary team to produce designs for equipment associated with specialist Naval deck machinery, including Replenishment At Sea (RAS) equipment, winches, reelers, and cranes. Responsibilities span the entire lifecycle, from interpreting customer requirements during tendering, through concept development, detailed design, manufacturing support, testing, and installation onboard naval vessels. You will also identify and undertake R&D and improvement activities to keep our products at the forefront of Naval technology.
Key responsibilities and tasks
- Lead the technical delivery of projects, overseeing multidisciplinary teams.
- Develop Mechanical Engineering solutions that meet client requirements, from requirements capture to concept design, product development, commissioning, and in-service support.
- Identify and develop R&D and Continuous Improvement opportunities.
- Investigate safety and technical problems using structured problem-solving techniques.
- Work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Provide technical guidance to equipment suppliers, internal departments, and customers. Approve/witness factory tests and inspections at supplier facilities.
- Manage supplier interfaces and provide technical assistance and approval.
- Review the technical work of others and guide colleagues, suppliers, and customers.
- Create technical design appraisal documents for submission to marine classification societies.
- Manage requirements, risks, assumptions, interfaces, and issues during all design phases.
Qualification and experience requirements
- BEng in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical capability based on practical experience.
- Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership with IMECHE or relevant institute.
- Relevant engineering experience, preferably in the marine or offshore oil and gas industry.
- Experience in highly regulated industries.
- Proven track record in leading technical project delivery to quality, cost, and schedule.
- Experience in concept, product development, and in-service support.
- Experience creating equipment assembly arrangements and BOMs using ERP/MRP systems.
- Assessment of designs for code compliance, using hand calculations and FEA.
- Production of technical specifications, test procedures, and manuals for marine mechanical systems.
- Experience with 2D and 3D CAD systems like AutoCAD and Creo.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications.
- Knowledge of BS EN 8888 and BS EN 22553 standards.
- Ability to work in a controlled documentation environment, self-motivated, with a positive team attitude.
- Good communication skills and ability to interface with external approval bodies.
Note: Some contracts are for the UK Ministry of Defence; the successful candidate must attain UK BPSS or SC Clearance without caveats.
