Overview
Balfour Beatty’s Power T&D business is delivering critical infrastructure to keep the UK powered. We’re seeking an experienced Site Engineer to join our team on the Mannington to Nursling Overhead Line (OHL) Refurbishment Scheme — spanning from north of Bournemouth to Southampton, south of Salisbury. This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in one of our major refurbishment projects, working alongside our Project Manager, Project Director and dedicated project team to ensure safe, sustainable and successful delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Project Manager/Director in planning, design, delivery, monitoring, commissioning, and project handover/close out.
- Understand specified engineered solutions and effectively brief working parties to ensure full compliance through to completion.
- Set people to work and supervise the delivery of works to achieve “right first time” outcomes, safely, sustainably and within programme and cost targets.
- Lead on-site teams, fostering a positive safety culture and ensuring compliance with project requirements, objectives and constraints (time, cost, quality, safety).
- Effectively manage, support and care for the people delivering the works.
- Monitor and report on progress, highlighting risks and proposing mitigation measures.
What you’ll be doing
- Attend periodic project reviews and meetings.
- Maintain accurate project records (progress reports, daily diaries).
- Prepare internal and external reports and liaise with stakeholders.
- Provide data and reports to enable informed, cost-effective decisions in line with strategy.
- Support scope and package assignments to enable coordinated working.
- Interpret technical information/drawings and translate into delivery on site.
- Lead by example in maintaining a relentless focus on Zero Harm.
- Ensure compliance with all health, safety and environmental legislation.
- Support Safety & Environmental tours, safety observations and initiatives.
- Prepare, review and work to RAMS; identify and report risks and hazards.
- Issue and control safety documentation; support incident responses.
- Complete audits and set people to work safely.
- Log and escalate risks and issues beyond delegated authority.
- Manage subcontractors: monitor attendance and progress, provide instruction and support to meet contractual requirements.
- Support procurement planning to ensure timely delivery of materials/resources.
- Monitor and follow project targets and KPIs.
- Support assurance activities (audits) and take action on findings.
- Contribute to continuous improvement workshops.
- Help develop and update resource-loaded schedules.
- Implement productivity and project controls techniques.
- Monitor progress, hold weekly meetings and apply Short Interval Control.
- Ensure operational milestones reflect the master schedule and customer expectations.
- Maintain awareness of project cost, budget and commercial impact.
- Escalate commercial changes and requisition plant and materials as required.
- Maintain Balfour Beatty Digital Group Minimum Standards.
- Use and promote digital tools appropriately and ensure team training.
Qualifications & Experience
- The following qualities/experience are desirable:Experience in implementing safe systems of work; experience in managing risks and change processes; good understanding of the standard forms of contracts; proficient in commercial/project management communications; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with all levels of the organisation; good interpersonal skills; ability to work under pressure with a flexible attitude; solutions-based problem solving; awareness and support of diversity and inclusion; personal development orientation; proficient on O365.
Candidate Requirements
- Holds or working towards a formal qualification in construction/engineering or equivalent industry experience.
- Holds CSCS and SSSTS or equivalent.
