About the Role

At Hargreaves Lansdown (HL) we are building our next generation platform, creating flexible and scalable applications in a multi-tenancy SaaS architecture. We\'re on the lookout for engineering leaders who can shape and grow high-performing teams, delivering first-class, quality-focused, and execution of projects. Embed continuous improvement into how the team builds, tests, deploys, and maintains software. Champion modern engineering practices (CI/CD, TDD/BDD, clean code).

About You

  • Proven experience leading engineering teams in complex, fast-paced environments.
  • Strong software engineering background (Java / TypeScript / cloud-native systems).
  • Excellent communicator - able to explain technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with Agile frameworks and collaborative delivery practices.
  • Deep understanding of system design, architecture and modern backend best practices.
  • A team-first mindset: you care deeply about people, outcomes, and culture.

Your Technical Toolkit

  • Java (21) and Spring Boot
  • AWS and cloud-native architecture
  • RDBMS / NoSQL databases
  • Event-driven and microservices architectures
  • Containers (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
  • CI/CD pipelines and DevOps principles
  • TDD / BDD testing frameworks

Interview Process

  1. Stage 1 - Discussion with our Hiring Manager (30 mins): a chance to discuss the role, our vision, our tech stack, and problems we solve.
  2. Stage 2 - Technical (70 mins): system design exercise with potential peers to explore a realistic engineering problem.
  3. Stage 3 - Leadership & Cultural Fit (70 mins): live session focusing on leading through a legacy Java system, technical direction, team leadership, and stakeholder communication.

Salary & Package

We offer a competitive salary of up to £115,000, depending on experience, alongside a generous performance-based bonus scheme. Your total reward package includes:

Working Schedule & Location

Working 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. We are based in Paddington Central offices at 4 Kingdom Street. Hybrid working model: 2-3 days a week in the office and remote flexibility for deep focus.
