Tech Lead Manager - Publishing Infrastructure

New Today

Overview

We are looking for an experienced technical leader, team leader and people manager to co-lead a cross functional, mission oriented product squad. This hybrid role is perfect for people wishing to remain close to delivery, love building high performing teams and staying close to technology with an element of hands-on contribution (~30% of time).

Stack and Focus

The stack is Typescript, NodeJS or NextJS, React, AWS. You will work on the content and data pipelines underpinning Which?'s technology platform, serving millions of users per month. The role focuses on backend engineering, providing APIs and data for other squads, with emphasis on performance, reliability and scalability. Experience with OpenSearch, event-driven architectures on AWS, and API design is highly valuable.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: establish a product vision for your domain and a strategy to deliver it through collaboration with peers (Product Managers, Design Leads, Delivery Managers, User Research, and Experiment Managers). Set ambitious OKRs and own delivery of impact.
  • Tech Leadership: establish a technical vision and strategy that enables the product vision. Guide the team to make technically sound decisions aligned with squad objectives. Hands-on contribution ~30% of the time at a Senior Engineer level; set the bar for engineering excellence through design, code reviews, best practices, and knowledge sharing while prioritising building a great team.
  • People Management: support 5-7 engineers with understanding challenges, feedback, development plans and pastoral care.

Leadership Qualities

  • Problem Solver: lead through uncertainty and ambiguity, championing a curious product mindset focused on delivering business outcomes; commercially minded with experience driving revenues or cost savings through technology and product innovation.
  • Evolutionary Architecture: guide architectural direction across domains; own end-to-end software and adapt architecture incrementally as needs evolve; comfortable working across front-end and back-end.
  • Multiplier: mentor engineers to grow from junior to senior levels, employing standards and modern engineering practices.
  • People centric: foster an inclusive, collaborative environment that enables high performance.
  • Strong bias to action: break large problems into smaller, executable steps with pace (days/weeks).

Team and Progression

You will be supported by an Engineering Manager who typically supports 3-4 teams. The Tech Lead Manager sits on our management track with potential paths to Engineering Manager or Principal Engineer, depending on career focus.

Hiring Process

  • Meet with Engineering leadership (video, ~30 minutes) to discuss role, technical direction across multiple teams, and product outcomes.
  • Interview on Team/Product Leadership, Culture and People Management.
  • Technical Take-Home Test (TypeScript).
  • System Design & Technical Interview (90 minutes, via video).
  • Squad Fit and Product Mindset interview (60 minutes, via video).

  • Discount site Pluxee with significant everyday discounts
  • Annual award eligibility depending on performance
  • Healthcare and private medical insurance; Vitality rewards program eligible after 6 months
  • Discretionary death-in-service benefit (six times annual salary)
