Responsibilities & expectations
You and your role
We're looking for skilled architects who are confident working on products & services in our complex digital environment. We're transforming DWP and the way millions of people access public services. You'll need to be a skilled technical expert, as well as a good communicator and leader. As our new Senior Technical Architect, you will design, implement and oversee the architecture of IT solutions that improve services for millions of DWP users. You'll work on the design, oversight and architecture governance of IT solutions that support DWP customers and help our colleagues be at the most effective. You will play a key role in shaping integration architecture across DWP's vast digital estate. Your expertise in APIs, event-driven architecture and enterprise integration patterns will be vital in delivering scalable solutions that support millions of users, and help over 100,000 colleagues and agents do a better job. You'll ensure technical quality, and keep designs aligned with DWP's Digital Blueprint, Enterprise Architecture and Product Roadmaps. You'll also advocate for good architecture and influence good decisions and the use of the right technology in forums and approval boards.
Location & working model
Location: You'll join us in one of our brilliant digital hubs in Manchester or Newcastle, whichever is most convenient for you.
Hybrid Working: We work a hybrid model - you'll spend some time working at home and sometime collaborating face to face in a hub.
Pay & Benefits
Pay: We offer competitive pay of up to £83,917, comprised of salary and Government Digital & Data allowance.
Pension: You'll get a brilliant civil service pension with employer contributions worth 28.97%, worth over £16,094 per year.
Holidays: A generous leave package starting at 26 days and rising to 31 days over time. You can also take up to 3 extra days off a month on flexi-time. You'll also get all the usual public holidays.

Qualifications & experience
What skills, knowledge and experience will you need?
- Architecture design across on-prem, cloud and hybrid environments involving networking, security, presentation, middleware, database, and integration aspects.
- Architecture design informed through principles, patterns, technical radars, practices and standards.
- Architecture design working with project delivery teams within agile, waterfall and hybrid environments throughout the lifecycle - from concept to go-live.
- Translating business requirements into technical solutions with traceability that can be demonstrated to stakeholders.
- Microservice and API-led architecture and integration design tools, techniques and best practice.
- API Management: Experience in designing and implementing APIs (REST/JSON, SOAP/XML, GraphQL), including API lifecycle management, API gateways, HTTP transport and security such as mTLS, OIDC.
- Integration Technologies: Proficiency in integration platforms like Kong EE, ISITO, Envoy, IBM WebSphere.
- Messaging and Streaming Technologies: Experience with messaging and streaming protocols and systems such as JMS, AMQP, MQTT, IBM MQ, Amazon SQS,SNS, Azure SB, and Kafka, Amazon Kinesis for asynchronous communication between systems.
