You and your role
We're looking for skilled architects who are confident working on products and services in our complex digital environment. We're transforming DWP and the way millions of people access public services. You'll need to be a skilled technical expert, as well as a good communicator and leader.
As our new Senior Technical Architect, you will design, implement and oversee the architecture of IT solutions that improve services for millions of DWP users. You will work on the design, oversight and architecture governance of IT solutions that support DWP customers and help our colleagues be at their most effective. You will play a key role in shaping integration architecture across DWP's vast digital estate. Your expertise in APIs, event-driven architecture and enterprise integration patterns will be vital in delivering scalable solutions that support millions of users, and help over 100,000 colleagues and agents do a better job. You will ensure technical quality, and keep designs aligned with DWP's Digital Blueprint, Enterprise Architecture and Product Roadmaps. You will also advocate for good architecture and influence good decisions and the use of the right technology in forums and approval boards.
Responsibilities
- Architecture design across on-prem, cloud and hybrid environments including networking, security, presentation, middleware, database and integration aspects.
- Architectural principles, patterns, technical radars, practices and standards informed design.
- Collaborate with delivery teams across agile, waterfall and hybrid lifecycles from concept to go-live.
- Translate business requirements into technical solutions with traceability for stakeholders.
- Microservice and API-led architecture and integration design.
- API design and lifecycle management (REST/JSON, SOAP/XML, GraphQL); API gateways and security (e.g., mTLS, OIDC).
- Integration technologies experience (e.g., Kong EE, ISITO, Envoy, IBM WebSphere).
- Messaging and streaming technologies (JMS, AMQP, MQTT, IBM MQ, SQS/SNS, Azure SB, Kafka, Kinesis) for asynchronous communication.
Qualifications
- Strong experience in API-led and event-driven architectures.
- Proven ability to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions.
- Experience across on-prem, cloud and hybrid environments; familiarity with enterprise integration patterns.

Location: One of our digital hubs in Manchester or Newcastle, or as otherwise arranged.
Hybrid Working: Hybrid model with mix of home and hub work.
Pay: Up to £83,917, comprising salary and Government Digital & Data allowance.
Pension: Civil service pension with employer contributions worth 28.97%.
Holidays: 26 days rising to 31 days, plus up to 3 extra flexi-time days and public holidays.
