Technical Director - Hydrogeology Lead at WSP in the UK & Ireland.

We are seeking an experienced Associate Director/Technical Director to lead a range of groundwater and hydrogeology projects within the Catchment Science team of our Sustainable Water Management Consulting (SWMC) group. The role includes leading technical delivery, developing junior staff, and securing an ongoing pipeline of project work. The appointment includes opportunities for formal people management and contributing to the growth of the hydrogeology practice.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical delivery of projects covering water resources hydrogeology, groundwater modelling, groundwater flooding, monitoring and groundwater quality.
  • Provide project direction including financial and change control and quality assurance through checking and reviewing.
  • Mentor, develop and supervise junior colleagues with opportunities for formal people management; work with the Technical Lead in SWMC to develop a programme of hydrogeology training.
  • Collaborate with the team and current Hydrogeology and Groundwater Services Lead to develop and agree scopes of services.
  • Generate high-quality bid proposals and develop innovative solutions to meet client needs.
  • Produce and supervise high-quality client- and public-facing deliverables, demonstrating clear communication and the ability to present data visualisation and interpretation.
  • Work collaboratively with other sectors/disciplines to deliver hydrogeological aspects of projects, including collaboration with hydrogeologists in Ground & Water, EIA and Mining teams.
  • Promote a safety-first attitude in line with WSP's health and safety policy and procedures.

What We Are Looking For

  • Groundwater and water resources modelling to support resource estimation, management and environmental impact assessment.
  • Strong understanding of UK hydrogeology and the environmental/regulatory framework for UK water management.
  • Strong project management and direction skills with experience of managing projects from start to finish; framework management experience desirable.
  • Clear understanding of client needs, opportunities and challenges, with a track record of leading and winning work.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to mentor and develop more junior staff.
  • Strong commercial awareness with experience in identifying and developing business opportunities and preparing winning proposals.
  • Excellent report-writing, technical review, numerical and analytical skills with attention to detail in solving hydrogeological problems.

Qualifications

  • MSc in Hydrogeology and a BSc in a related discipline (e.g., geology, geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, environmental science).
  • You will have gained, or be working towards, chartership with a relevant professional body.
