Job Description
A well-regarded independent developer with two studios in Europe—one in the United Kingdom and one in the Netherlands—dedicated to crafting immersive AAA titles. Located at the heart of vibrant game-development hubs, the studio places unwavering emphasis on quality, player experience, and strong partnerships.
Its philosophy centres on harmonizing every facet of a game—visuals, mechanics, and emotional impact—to deliver deeply engaging interactive worlds.
With a major unannounced AAA project now in production, the studio is ready to push the boundaries of technical innovation and creative design.
Role Summary
The Technical Director will oversee all engineering efforts, shaping technical strategy and ensuring world-class performance across AAA projects. Reporting to senior leadership, this role carries significant influence over both project outcomes and studio infrastructure.
The successful candidate will lead a substantial, multidisciplinary engineering team, championing best practices in code quality, system architecture, and scalable online services. This is a hands-on leadership position that balances strategic vision with day-to-day technical guidance.
Required Experience
- Demonstrated track record as a Technical Director or equivalent senior engineering lead on multiple shipped AAA titles.
- Deep expertise in C++ and strong familiarity with major game engines (especially Unreal Engine) across console and PC platforms.
- Comprehensive understanding of rendering, tools development, performance optimization, and other core game-engineering disciplines.
- Proven ability to manage large, geographically dispersed teams and collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Solid experience designing and overseeing multiplayer architectures.
Desirable Skills
- Proficiency in additional programming (e.g., C#, Python, Rust).
- Prior work on large-scale, real-time multiplayer projects.
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies and remote team management.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and evolve the technical roadmap, architecture, and build pipelines for AAA projects.
- Lead recruitment, mentorship, and career development for engineering staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning.
- Partner with creative directors to set production milestones and ensure technical feasibility.
- Conduct regular code reviews, performance audits, and architectural assessments.
- Collaborate closely with art, design, and production teams to uphold the game’s vision.
- Identify and mitigate technical risks to maintain development schedules.
- Guide research and prototyping efforts to evaluate emerging technologies.
Benefits and Perks
- Work on high-profile, international AAA projects.
- Access to state-of-the-art development hardware and software.
- Flexible hybrid working model (three days on-site per week).
- Generous holiday allowance, including a year-end studio-wide break.
- Discretionary bonus and competitive pension plan.
- Comprehensive private healthcare package with dental, optical, and mental-health support.
- On-site amenities: stocked kitchen, snacks, and beverages.
- Regular social events, team outings, and cross-studio collaboration opportunities.
- Brand-new office facilities in Guildford, with chances to engage with the Netherlands studio.
This leadership role offers a unique chance to shape both technical strategy and studio culture at an independent AAA developer.
Skilled engineers who thrive on innovation and collaboration will find this opportunity deeply rewarding.
