Technical External Audit Lead
New Today
Are you a qualified external auditor with a passion for technical excellence and public accountability? Do you enjoy distilling complex audit matters into accessible insight for stakeholders? Are you ready to influence audit quality at a national level in a high-profile public sector body?
I’m working with a small, independent organisation that plays a crucial role in the regulation and oversight of public sector audit. With a small team, they punch above their weight in terms of influence, and they’re now seeking to appoint a Technical External Audit Lead to help shape audit quality across the country’s public bodies.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting the Director of Audit with expert advice on public sector audit matters
- Providing technical briefings and guidance for internal teams, including those managing audit contracts and fees
- Reviewing and interpreting audit plans, procedures, and firm performance data
- Assisting in the review of audit quality and firm compliance across the framework
- Preparing technical content for board meetings, advisory panels, and external presentations
- Contributing to audit fee strategy, including fee variations and quality-linked procurement evaluation
- Advising on ethical standards, independence issues, and audit law
- Working with stakeholders including audit firms, local authorities, national bodies, and regulators
This is a rare opportunity to step into a visible, impactful role that blends technical expertise with strategic influence. The postholder will work alongside senior figures in audit, regulation, and local government, helping to shape national approaches to audit quality and compliance during a critical period of sector transformation.
The organisation operates a hybrid model with an office base in central London. There is no fixed attendance pattern, and all travel is reimbursed when on-site presence is required.
To be considered, please meet the following criteria:
- Fully qualified accountant (CCAB or equivalent)
- Deep technical audit knowledge, ideally in public sector or local government context
- Experience interpreting audit regulations, quality frameworks, and audit standards
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Able to distil technical detail into insight for a range of audiences
- Comfortable engaging with national stakeholders and providing authoritative advice
- Exceptional organisation, analysis and project management skills
If you’re ready to bring your technical audit knowledge to a national platform, apply today – interviews are being set up at short notice.
