We are looking for a highly skilled and hands-on Lead Java Engineer to lead a focused engineering initiative centered on payment gateway integration. This role combines technical leadership with active coding responsibilities within a semi-autonomous structure to ensure fast, efficient delivery. You will guide implementation best practices, support junior engineers when needed, and own solution design and code quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical design and development of integrations with multiple payment gateways (preference for Worldpay).
  • Own and implement encryption/decryption logic using industry-standard security protocols.
  • Translate and transform data formats for reliable communication with payment services.
  • Interpret, navigate, and apply complex API documentation with minimal support.
  • Troubleshoot systems at the network level to ensure robust and secure integrations.
  • Contribute directly to coding, code reviews, and architectural decisions.
  • Operate confidently in a cloud-hosted environment (primarily Azure).
  • Support light administrative tasks related to project ramp-up, where needed.

Must-Have Skills

  • Expert-level proficiency in Java.
  • Proven experience integrating with payment gateways.
  • Strong understanding of encryption/decryption techniques and secure coding standards.
  • Experience resolving low-level systems and networking challenges.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions.
  • Comfortable translating product needs into scalable technical solutions.
  • Cloud experience in Azure and AWS

Nice to Have

  • Experience using observability tools like Grafana or OpenTelemetry.
  • Familiarity with agile delivery in lean, distributed team environments.
  • Lead a small, semi-independent engineering initiative.
  • Report to a Product Leader.
  • Collaborate with other senior engineers based in the UK and Hungary.

Location

Spain, Portugal, or UK, Central London or Hertfordshire (hybrid). The position requires travel to the UK for project-related activities.

Benefits

  • The chance to join an organisation with triple-digit growth that is changing the paradigm on how software products are built.
  • The opportunity to form part of an amazing, multicultural community of tech experts.
  • A highly competitive compensation package.
  • Medical insurance.
