Overview
The role is a permanent position in the Environmental Assessment and Advice Team in Southwest Wales. You will contribute to the protection and sustainable management of natural resources through fieldwork, technical support and data analysis. You will deliver environmental monitoring and advice across Neath Port Talbot, Swansea, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and parts of Ceredigion. You will be based at one of our regional offices with flexibility to work from home and a significant amount of fieldwork during key periods of the year.
What you will do
- Collect water quality samples from rivers, lakes and coastal bathing waters.
- Conduct ecological surveys such as kick-sampling for invertebrates and diatoms and support electrofishing operations.
- Operate monitoring equipment in aquatic environments; assist with terrestrial and geological SSSI monitoring.
- Contribute to team functions including equipment maintenance, administrative support and health and safety management.
- Work as part of an electric fishing team to deliver NRW fisheries monitoring programme and other sampling as required.
- Manage collation and input of monitoring data.
- Contribute to a positive health, safety and well-being culture and undertake relevant health and safety duties.
Responsibilities and expectations
- Be confident working outdoors in a variety of field conditions, including remote locations and near water.
- A valid UK manual driving licence is essential; ability to swim and undertake physically demanding tasks.
- Help meet statutory reporting requirements and inform decisions across Wales to shape environmental outcomes.
- Adopt and promote Health and Safety practices and contribute to the team’s effective operation.
- Participate in incident response activities as required.
Your qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills
- Previous experience in a monitoring role (preferably electric fishing).
- Strong self-management and organisational skills and ability to work well as part of a team.
- Current full UK driving licence to drive NRW fleet vehicles (cars and vans).
- Ability to swim and be confident in water (essential).
- IT competencies including MS Office and database experience.
Welsh language requirements
- Essential: A1 – Entry level (understanding basic phrases and pronunciation of Welsh names).
