This role involves owning the automation, reliability, and governance of test environments to support development and testing teams.

Responsibilities

  • Automate environment lifecycle: Develop Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to automate provisioning, teardown, and configuration of test environments, integrating them with the CI/CD pipeline.
  • Establish service level objectives (SLOs): Define and measure key service indicators (SLIs) for test environments, such as availability and provisioning time.
  • Monitor environment health and performance: Use observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana) to track health, identify bottlenecks, and resolve issues proactively.
  • Manage incident response: Lead incident management for test environment issues, conducting blameless post-mortems to identify root causes and implement lasting fixes.
  • Minimize toil: Automate manual, repetitive tasks to free up engineering time for more strategic work.
  • Strategic and cultural responsibilities: Drive continuous improvement by analyzing environment performance data, incident reports, and post-mortems; balance reliability and speed using an error budget; promote a blameless culture across development, QA, and SRE teams; engage in capacity planning to scale infrastructure; advance test data management with Test Data Managers.

Qualifications

  • Technical Skills: Expertise with monitoring and logging tools (Prometheus, Splunk, Grafana); CI/CD platforms (Jenkins, GitLab CI); and configuration management tools (Ansible, Terraform).
  • Cloud infrastructure knowledge: Deep understanding of AWS, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and serverless computing.
  • Scripting and programming: Strong scripting skills in Python or Bash.
  • Systems and networking: Solid understanding of Linux systems, networking concepts, and database management.

Soft Skills

  • Leadership and influence: Champion SRE practices and influence stakeholders across teams.
  • Problem-solving: Analytical and debugging skills for complex environment issues.
  • Communication: Clear collaboration across development, QA, and operations.
