We’re looking for an exceptional UKCI Projections Scientistto help us make a difference to our planet.

As our UKCI Projections Scientist, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home.This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Your world of expertise

You will contribute to design and production of new probabilistic climate projections, under the UK Climate Information (UKCI) programme.You will update and extend a statistical framework that allows climate model projections to be combined with observations, accounting for climate model performance, physical drivers of regional climate change and natural climate variability.Your research will support a well-adapted future for the UK, by providing a range of future projections that help users avoid overconfident decision - making .

• Work with colleagues in the Climate Processes and Projections team, to develop probabilistic projections of regional climate change by combining information from climate simulations with observational metrics of model performance.
• Develop statistical downscaling methods that link projections from global climate models to high-resolution regional simulations.
• Contribute to a package of UK Climate Information (UKCI), providing policymakers, planners and impacts scientists with new projections of national climate.
• Communicate project outputs in peer-reviewed publications, reports and other media
• Present to national and international science conferences, user meetings and public audiences.

As our UKCI Projections Scientist, your total reward package will be up to £47,606 annually, which includes:

• An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 28.97%
• Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years andoptionto buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annualleave

Essential Criteria, skills and experience:

• Evidence of postgraduate research experience in physical and/or mathematical science (we’re experts by nature).
• Evidence of ability to understand and apply statistical methods to postprocess complex experimental data, analyse their output and gain new scientific insight (we’re experts by nature).
• Evidence of strong programming skills and a demonstrated ability to use them to solve technical problems and/or answer scientific questions (we’re experts by nature).
• Evidence of excellent written and oral communication skills, with an ability to communicate complex scientific and technical information to a range of audiences via a variety of media (we live and breathe it).
• Evidence of ability to work effectively as a member of a team to deliver successful outcomes (we’re better together) .
