What You’ll Do

The Underwriting & Compliance Manager is responsible for managing the operational activities of an underwriting team across multiple product lines. The profile also supports risk management activities to assess customer and portfolio risks. This position evaluates the underwriting processes involving application information, underwriting models, developing customer strategies, and approving new opportunities. The successful applicant ensures the underwriting team is compliant with all Product, Legal, and Audit guidelines for the region, with additional responsibilities for process alignment internationally.

  • Underwriting Management: Lead and develop a small international team of Underwriters, effectively prioritising and organising work to maximise opportunities and deliver business results.
  • Ensure continuous improvement and empowerment of direct reports and self by developing and executing development plans.
  • Assist in evaluating new and renewal marine risks in line with company guidelines, ensuring a balanced portfolio.
  • Data-Driven Decision-Making: Analyse new submissions, review claims history, assess loss ratios, and oversee pricing discussions. Processing complex and large deals from submission to proposal.
  • Risk Assessment & Compliance: Ensure all underwriting decisions align with underwriting authorities and regulatory requirements. Maintaining compliance with corporate governance, UPS standards and regulatory requirements
  • Portfolio Management: Manage the performance of our cargo book, identifying trends, recommending and tracking corrective actions.
  • Claims Assessment: collaborate with claims and data teams to analyse loss ratios and emerging risk trends.
  • Technical Execution: Ensuring precise data of record keeping across the internal platforms.
  • Reporting & Analytics: Prepare and monitor underwriting reports and KPIs, helping underwriters assess portfolio performance and deliver quality requirements.
  • Sales & Customer Engagement: Collaborate closely through all phases of underwriting and policy binding to obtain additional underwriting information, clarify policy terms, and ensure seamless customer experience, including training for new sales personnel.
  • Operational Efficiency: Assist in policy construction, issuance, endorsements, declarations, and premium calculations with a focus on accuracy and timeliness.
  • Contribute to the creation of new business opportunities and strategic partnerships.
  • Market Awareness: Research market trends, pricing strategies, and competitor activities to support business development initiatives.

What You’ll Need

  • Around 3-5 years’ experience within the insurance / marine cargo industry.
  • Prior experience of managing employees, monitoring performance and ensuring your team is always focused on the key challenges.
  • Strong numerical proficiency with experience in MS Excel for underwriting analysis and reporting.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical skills, confident handling, analysing and interpreting data. Ensuring underwriting precision in every transaction.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills – you’re comfortable interacting with internal and external customers.
  • Fluency in English is essential. French, Italian or German language skills are beneficial.
  • A CII qualification preferred, or educated at an equivalent Degree level.
