OverviewVacancy for Senior Java Developer at The National ArchivesRemote, Kew • Up to £700 per day • Fixed TermRole purposeAn experienced Java developer is required to design, implement and test improvements to the performance and features of the DROID file identification tool, starting with enabling DROID to be integrated with cloud-based workflows.ResponsibilitiesDesign, implement and test improvements to DROID, with a focus on enabling integration with cloud-based workflows and service infrastructures.Unify the underlying code base for CLI and GUI; improve performance; reduce installation issues; enable integration with other TNA systems.Work with an incremental, Agile approach to deliver based on a prioritised roadmap and provide regular progress demonstrations.Team and stakeholdersWork with a Product Manager, Technical Architect, Lead and Senior Developers (available for discussion of technical options, code review, and acceptance).Users include Digital Archivists (current tool users, available to contribute to testing and acceptance) and internal/external Developers wishing to use DROID as part of a cloud-based workflow.Roadmap and expectationsPrioritised roadmap includes: enabling integration of DROID into cloud-based workflows and service infrastructures; unifying the code base for CLI and GUI; improving performance; reducing installation issues; enabling integration with other TNA systems.Supplier will explore technical options, design, document, implement and test a series of incremental improvements to DROID, and transfer knowledge to The National Archives’ staff.Working arrangementsRemote working with occasional on-site meetings or presentations.Expected working pattern: Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm with regular active communication with TNA; some flexibility in working hours may be possible by mutual agreement.Candidate to provide own equipment; TNA will provide access to GitHub and Slack. Additional communication via Teams and email.The specialist will scope, plan, implement, test and deliver work incrementally, following an Agile approach; frequent review sessions will be arranged to demonstrate progress and gather feedback from users and stakeholders.
