This proudly independent small animal hospital has been at the heart of the Hertfordshire community for over 120 years. Since achieving RCVS accredited status in 1985, the practice has continued to invest in the latest equipment, facilities, and training to deliver gold standard patient and client care. With an extensive refurbishment on the horizon, this is the perfect time to join a forward thinking, community rooted team.
The hospital boasts a friendly, close-knit team of 16 experienced Vets, allowing most cases to be worked up and treated in-house – from complex medical investigations to advanced orthopaedics and soft tissue surgeries. Clinical interests within the team are wide ranging, covering orthopaedics, ECC, small animal internal medicine, behaviour, dermatology, ophthalmology, and more. Supporting them is a superb nursing team of 29 RVNs, SVNs, and ACAs, alongside an excellent administrative team who keep everything running seamlessly.
Facilities are second to none – with ASIF kits, mono/bipolar cautery, multi-parameter anaesthetic monitors with capnography, digital X-ray, rigid and doppler ultrasound, in-house laboratory, laser therapy, tonometry, operating microscope, slit lamp, loupes, a separate dental suite with dental X-ray, and a brand-new, top-of-the-range ultrasound machine. The practice has also recently upgraded its flexible video endoscopy and invested in laparoscopy, soon to be fully operational.
They are seeking a Veterinary Surgeon with a few years’ experience who is ready to take the next step in their career within a collaborative, supportive, and progressive team. Whether you already have a specialist interest or are eager to explore a new area, you’ll have access to a varied caseload, hands on guidance, and full support for further training – including funding for certificates. An interest in ophthalmology would be a bonus, but is by no means essential.
In this role, you’ll be part of a culture where knowledge sharing and teamwork are part of daily life – whether you’re discussing a complex case, assisting on a new procedure, or picking up skills from colleagues with different expertise. You’ll also have the opportunity to mentor newer graduates, helping to shape the next generation of veterinary professionals while developing your own leadership skills.
Full-time vets work a 4-day week with an early finish once a week. For seven weeks out of nine, this is a 1 pm finish, meaning you will only be working a 3.5-day week. For the remaining two weeks out of nine, the early finish is 5 pm. They can be flexible with the rota, so if you are looking for a part-time position, they are happy to chat about the options available. You will have designated time blocks for breaks, as well as for catching up on calls and admin, and a spacious and comfortable staff room with sofas to get away from the clinical area during breaks.
They value their work-life balance, so they decided to split the weekends so nobody works a full weekend on-call. These are the equivalent of 1:9 but split over two weekends, and they offer bonus pay for any procedures carried out when on-call. You will have an RVN on-site 24/7 to care for any inpatients.
This is more than just a job – it’s a chance to join a practice where you’ll be supported, valued, and encouraged to grow, all while working in a well-equipped hospital that’s as passionate about its people as it is about its patients!
