As the VP of Engineering, you will collaborate with senior leadership to define the technical roadmap and ensure alignment with our business goals. In this role, you will oversee the entire engineering function, ensuring that projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to the highest quality. You will have the responsibility of managing resources, budgets, and schedules while continuously improving our engineering processes. By leveraging your expertise in technology and leadership, you will guide teams to adopt cutting-edge practices, fostering an agile environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead Strategic Platform Delivery: Spearhead the engineering effort supporting the global rollout of our new strategic CPaaS (Communications Platform as a Service) across the UK, Europe, USA and Australia, ensuring a successful launch and adoption.
- Lead and Inspire: Lead, mentor, and develop a distributed organisation responsible for our multi-channel communication platforms (SMS, RCS, WhatsApp, Voice, Email), directly managing a team of experienced Engineering Managers.
- Drive M&A Technology Strategy: Assist in technical due diligence for potential mergers and acquisitions, and lead the subsequent integration of target technology stacks and teams post-acquisition.
- Drive Technical & Quality Strategy: Define and execute a comprehensive engineering strategy that prioritises an automation-first approach to quality. This includes embedding Unit, Integration, Contract, Volume & Performance, Chaos engineering, and Synthetic testing and monitoring principles into our development lifecycle.
- Collaborate Across Leadership: Work as a key partner to the Head of Product, VP of Engineering (USA), Head of TechOps and the broader Tech Leadership Team to ensure a cohesive and aligned technology strategy and roadmap.
- Champion Engineering Innovation & Enablement: Drive the adoption of modern engineering practices and productivity tools, including AI-powered tooling such as GitHub Copilot and Cursor to enhance developer velocity and code quality.
- Champion Continuous Delivery & DevSecOps: Implement and mature modern continuous delivery practices, including feature flagging, trunk-based development, automated quality gates, and embedding application security tooling (SAST, SCA) directly into the development workflow.
- Engage Commercially: Partner with commercial leaders throughout the UK, Europe, and Australia to align technical roadmaps with business objectives and act as the senior technical point of contact for commercial colleagues.
- Foster Ownership: Instil a "you build it, you own it" mindset, empowering teams with accountability for the uptime, security, performance, and monitoring of their services.
Essential Qualifications:
- Recent experience in a Head of Engineering or VP Engineering role, with proven success in managing and mentoring a team of engineering managers.
- A track record of managing high-scale, high-throughput products and platforms in a geographically distributed environment.
- A deep understanding of modern, automation-first testing methodologies and the ability to instil a quality-first culture.
- Proven experience leading platform and product migrations from on-premise to the cloud, ideally utilising serverless technologies on Microsoft Azure.
- Strong experience implementing modern continuous delivery and DevSecOps best practices, including feature flagging, trunk-based development, A/B testing, and automated quality and security gates (SAST, SCA).
- Expertise in driving Agile transformations and implementing Agile at scale delivery frameworks (e.g., SAFe, LeSS) across multiple engineering teams.
- Demonstrated ability to manage senior stakeholders, work with commercial leaders, and handle customer escalations with diplomacy and effectiveness.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience in M&A activities, including technical due diligence and post-acquisition technology integration.
- Experience operating within a fast-paced, private equity-backed business.
- A development background in C# or Java within distributed architectures (e.g., microservices).
- Experience working with near-shore scaled partner engineering teams.
- Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) technologies like Microsoft ARM templates or Terraform.
- Strong domain experience in multi-channel business communications (SMS, RCS, WhatsApp, Voice, Email).
