This role supports the Cancer Alliances ambition to improve early cancer diagnosis across Mid and South Essex. Working within the NHS communications team, the postholder will lead targeted communications and engagement with primary care networks (PCNs), patient groups, and voluntary sector partners. Key responsibilities include promoting cancer screening uptake, especially among underserved communities, sharing updated referral pathways, and developing educational resources for non-clinical staff. The role acts as a vital link between the cancer programme and communications, ensuring timely information flow, stakeholder engagement, and delivery of awareness campaigns. It also contributes to broader ICB communications priorities, supporting system-wide collaboration and patient-focused messaging.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the ICB cancer programme team to develop engagement plans for earlier diagnosis and prevention in cancer for the MSE region, targeting primary care and the public
  • Develop a communications schedule using social media and existing resources to promote signs and symptoms of cancer
  • Collaborate with the Cancer Alliance to provide insights for central resources for patients available to all ICBs
  • Ensure projects meet milestones and timescales; act as the link between the cancer programme and the communications team
  • Lead work to provide assurance to cancer stakeholders on progress; nurture relationships with stakeholders across the system
  • Make decisions, escalate issues where appropriate, and manage staff and budgets where applicable
  • Demonstrate business acumen, ensuring value for money and alignment with ICB objectives
  • Competently use ICB digital platforms (e.g., Primary Care Hub/SharePoint and Engagement HQ) to support communications and engagement

Person Specification

  • Essential: Understanding of ICB values; ability to work with partners to deliver cross-stakeholder solutions
  • Qualifications: Degree or equivalent; postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience; project management qualification or equivalent
  • Experience: Senior NHS/public sector experience; proven project leadership with primary care stakeholders; handling highly confidential information
  • Skills: Strong written and verbal communication; advanced IT skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint); attention to detail; prioritisation and organisation; ability to work to deadlines
  • Leadership: Ability to work in teams or independently; ability to influence and persuade across disciplines
  • Knowledge: Understanding of relevant systems and NHS policy context; awareness of current NHS issues
