About the Role
Balfour Beatty Power in Scotland is seeking a Design Manager – Roads to join their Power T&D team. The role involves overseeing the design delivery for the Skye OHL and UGC projects, collaborating closely with commercial, production and engineering teams throughout the project stages.
As the Design Manager, you will play a crucial role in managing the design and construction of access routes in challenging terrains. Your responsibilities include coordinating internal resources and supply‑chain expertise to develop sustainable engineering solutions for overhead line or cable projects.
Key aspects of the role include stakeholder and supplier management to ensure smooth design selection and implementation within project timelines. Prioritising standardisation, safety and functionality, we aim to integrate these principles into our work culture.
The position requires a hybrid work approach, combining state‑of‑the‑art Common Data Environment tools with on‑site assessments to fully understand project requirements. While experience in road design or project management is beneficial, it is not a mandatory requirement.

Accountabilities
Manage the development and implementation of design proposals ensuring they meet customer requirements, including budget constraints, and present proposals for approval to the customer. The design should deliver:
Safety in construction and use
Quality within affordable parameters
Ease of maintenance, energy efficiency with minimum environmental impact
Innovation to meet customer goals and positive impact on the local community
Other responsibilities include:
Effective briefing of the Design Teams
Management of subcontractor design packages and technical approvals
Leadership of the design deliverables programme, ensuring a clear schedule of deliverables
Lead gate reviews and timely sign‑off at each project gate, communicating progress to the project manager and principal design manager
Co‑ordination and production of design data, deliverables, reports and documentation essential to the project and contractual requirements
Soliciting and obtaining advice on the buildability of design proposals for all packages
Liaising with statutory bodies and authorities such as town planning, building control and services (e.g. gas and water)
Managing the change control process
Supporting implementation of the BIM Common Data Environment and workflows
Leading value engineering process and application of lean construction techniques to save money, reduce waste and optimise construction
Capturing learning and best practice for sharing across the business
Proactively contributing to the risk and value management process
Living the Balfour Beatty values and ensuring a relentless focus on zero harm and safety by design
Who we’re looking for
This role requires an individual with proven experience in delivering design services, both directing design development and on‑site during construction, successfully implementing design strategies into construction practice.
Leadership skills in a matrix organisation are required to deliver design services in a timely manner with a customer‑ and business‑sector‑specific focus. Good interpersonal and communication skills are required, coupled with an ability to form effective relationships with partners under time pressure.
Good working knowledge of BIM is required. The individual will have experience within the most current forms of construction contracts such as NEC3.
HND or higher academic base. Relevant professional membership with an appropriate institute, e.g. RIBA, BIBSE, IET, aligned to the workstream is recommended.
Excellent IT skills relevant to the business stream are desirable and Microsoft Office is essential.
Numeracy and report writing are a requirement.
