Enterprise Design & Research and the Director role

The Enterprise Design & Research team is a global team of highly talented multi-disciplinary designers and researchers. We are highly embedded within the digital product management organization and lead design efforts from concept through to production for the largest servicing channels for American Express, across web, mobile and push.

Enterprise Acquisition Design

The Enterprise Acquisition Design team is seeking a seasoned Director of Product Design to lead a talented group of product designers and deliver best-in-class acquisition design solutions in partnership with our International Acquisition teams. You’ll collaborate closely with digital product management, technology, and business leadership to execute a design strategy grounded in a robust Design System foundation.

This is a high-impact leadership role that brings together the specialized talents across Enterprise Design & Research, including Product Design, Content Design, and User Research, to create user-centered experiences that are both impactful and scalable.

How will you make an impact in this role?

Vision & Strategy

• Develop and communicate a compelling design vision aligned with product and business goals
• Stay current with industry trends and integrate best practices into the design strategy

Team Leadership & Management

• Lead, mentor, and grow a team of product designers
• Set clear goals, expectations, and support career development
• Ensure effective planning, scoping, and delivery of design work
• Promote team cohesion, psychological safety, and a growth mindset

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Partner with product managers, engineers, and executives to define and prioritize design initiatives.
• Champion collaboration between design and other departments.

Design Excellence

• Define and maintain design principles, guidelines, and standards
• Advocate for user-centric design, ensuring end-user needs are central to the process
• Present design concepts and strategies to executive stakeholders with clarity and impact.

Minimum Qualifications

• Proven experience in people leadership and team building
• Strong communication and storytelling skills
• Expertise in product and design strategy
• Mastery of design thinking and accessibility design
• Proficiency in customer journey mapping, prototyping, wireframing, and requirements gathering
• Experience working with design systems and cross-functional teams
