Job Description:
The size and complexity of Shell Trading & Supply (T&S) has increased substantially over the past few years and the expectations around efficient and effective processes and controls have also shifted for T&S. We are continuing to strengthen the risk management capabilities of the organisation from a people, process, data and systems perspective in both the first and second lines.
The Commercial Operations organization within T&S operates in 9 trading hubs, 4 key SBO locations, with over 1500 people. It is designed to improve T&S cross business execution including both 'run the business capabilities' e.g., trading operations support and 'change the business capabilities'. This is achieved through enhanced business activities across key activities such controls and processes.
T&S Integrated Process Risk and Controls team (IPRC) supports, protects, and enables the business by driving synergies and positive change via standardization and improvement of process, control and assurance activities, whilst aligning with the overarching T&S priorities and delivering a commercial approach to operating controls and implementation of second line activities across commercial lines of business.
What's the role?
- Provide first-line business-facing expertise and guidance on Non-Financial Risk topics as it applies to Commercial Operations, engaging and influencing senior leadership within Commercial Operations on the importance of proactive risk management, with a particular focus on LoaD
- Credibly partnering with Operations Risk, Compliance and Business Integration Assurance Managers (BIAMs) on how to apply and operationalise GRCA, CLE expectations across this team. Promote a positive risk culture which supports a "Learner Mindset" around risk issues and encourages learnings from incidents
- Contribution to Commercial Operations governance meetings related to the Operational Risk profile, escalate operational risk/control issues to commercial stakeholders and incorporate relevant management information to advise on steps to be taken by the business to manage and/or mitigate the issue
- Act as the Commercial Operations focal for the T&S Control Learning Events process to continually improve the process and business impact and learning though automation / AI / Digital and, where appropriate, facilitate the "read across" in T&S
- Evolve and execute the T&S first-line assurance framework and methodology. Focus on establishing and leading a control testing utility to support across LoB to ensure T&S have a fit for purpose control landscape in collaboration with 2nd / 3rd line and BIAMs
- Perform selective impactful control testing assurance activities for the LoBs to provide and opine on the risk and control environment, activities to be agreed across LoBs
- Identify opportunities for digitalization, standardisation and continuous improvement in assurance processes and implement best practices to enhance the company's risk management capabilities
- Act as the T&S Safety & Environment and Asset Management (SEAM) T&S lead supporting the custodian and owner, to ensure fit for purpose senior leadership management information & reporting and escalation on a timely basis. Additionally, act as a Commercial Operations SEAM focal to consolidate input into these timely updates
- Set vision, direction and upskill the IPRC governance and assurance specialist team including portfolio governance, roadmap development, assurance integration and value realization, future-proof the function, leveraging AI to solution current and future operational bottlenecks
- Navigate and resolve complex stakeholder dynamics, driving consensus across divergent views to deliver coherent, risk-informed decisions that align with enterprise-wide control objectives.
- Support PDS strategic objective by embedding a culture of process and control excellence, process optimization, and building out a centre of excellence, control maturity, and data-driven performance management. Support the manager in driving these through T&S, and help train more junior members of the team
What do we need from you?
- Must have demonstrable deep experience of having worked at a large complex peer institution (Oil & Gas Major, Independent Commodity Trader, Investment Manager / Bank) in a similar role
- Ideally experience of physical and financial commodity trading and/or having worked in a regulated trading business
- Strong technical knowledge of what excellent assurance and governance means, and what good methodologies and frameworks look like accompanied with a commercial and pragmatic mindset
- Strong knowledge of ways of working, across enterprise, strategic or non-financial risk areas
- Excellent stakeholder management and engagement skills, including the ability to communicate complicated ideas in a clear and uncomplicated fashion
- Excellent attention to detail, methodical, organized
- Resilient when working under pressure, with the ability to prioritise tasks to meet deadlines
- Self-starter, curious, highly motivated, outcome driven
- Good judgement to provide advice, question discrepancies, escalate issues

Special Challenges/Additional Comments (High Degree of Complexity)
The T&S business environment is very dynamic, with a highly complex regulatory and internal system landscape. The team is located globally, with multiple interfaces to our Trading hubs in London, Rotterdam, Houston, and Singapore and will therefore require strong communication, influencing skills and virtual management of interfaces.

- Level of stakeholder tends to be leaders up to VP/EVP level.
- Engagement with a large variety of (groups of) stakeholders on an operational and strategic level, managing competing priorities. This stakeholder engagement includes participating in and leveraging relevant networks.
- Engagement with stakeholders across all lines of defence (LOD1, LOD2 and LOD3).
- To develop and maintain excellent working relationships with internal & external trading / contracting parties.
- Commercial Focus & Operational Excellence
- The key challenge is to be the commercial mind for delivering commercial value through end-to-end process and to implement risk management improvements.
- In addition, mastery of operational excellence is required to drive the right solutions in the most economical way.
- Complexity
- A good understanding of complex systems, data, and processes is required, combined with a broad range (and potentially conflicting) internal stakeholder interest
- Support the development of new tools as part of the digitalization agenda to capture the complexity, simplify ways of working and improve decision making
