Overview

Intelligence Research Officer – National Environmental Crime Unit (NECU), Environment Agency. The Environment Agency aims to be an intelligence-led organisation; this role helps manage intelligence to assess and mitigate threat, risk and harm. Environmental crime is a strategic priority, with focus on supporting investigations and removing unlawful operators from waste regimes. The role involves developing and accessing intelligence from various sources to inform decision making and produce actionable intelligence for customers. The NECU supports the Environment Agency’s enforcement activities across 14 geographical areas and national services, tackling thousands of offences each year. You will be part of the Intelligence & Partnerships department, providing intelligence products and assessments to colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively develop and access intelligence from a range of sources to inform decision making.
  • Produce actionable intelligence products for the Environment Agency and its customers.
  • Support investigations and help prioritise interventions to remove unlawful operators from waste regimes.
  • Respond to incidents as part of an incident role; be available for incident response or business continuity support (may attract additional payment; training and alternative working arrangements provided).
  • Work with intelligence professionals and provide intelligence products and assessments within the team.

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Experience collecting and evaluating data from varied sources to inform intelligence products; ability to interrogate IT systems and databases; enthusiasm and curiosity for finding information.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to listen and transmit information effectively; ability to represent the Environment Agency professionally with partners.
  • Ability to use initiative and adapt approach as needed; ability to multitask and juggle administrative activities to support colleagues and customers.
  • Skills in standard IT packages; ability to retrieve information accurately.
  • Strong teamwork and an inclusive, supportive approach.
  • Location is flexible; occasional travel to Birmingham and Sheffield offices may be required.
  • Security vetting checks (SC and NPPV3) will be required.
