Overview
We are seeking an Intelligence Research Officer to join the National Environmental Crime Unit (NECU) in a dynamic part of the Environment Agency. The Environment Agency aims to be an intelligence-led organisation, with threat, risk and harm assessed and managed through professional intelligence practices. Environmental crime is a strategic priority with high public, media and stakeholder attention. This role supports investigations and helps prioritise and drive interventions to remove unlawful operators from the waste regimes.
You will help deliver our response by pro-actively developing and accessing intelligence from a range of sources to inform decision making and provide actionable intelligence products for our customers.
The team supports the Environment Agency’s enforcement community across 14 geographical areas and national services, addressing around 40,000 suspected and alleged offences annually. You will be part of the Intelligence & Partnerships department, working with intelligence professionals to provide intelligence products and assessments to colleagues.
Responsibilities
- Pro-actively develop and access intelligence from a range of sources to inform decision making
- Produce actionable intelligence products for customers
- Support investigations and help prioritise and drive interventions to remove unlawful operators from waste regimes
- Respond to incidents as required; be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident (may attract additional payment and training; alternative working arrangements available)
- Represent the Environment Agency professionally with partners
- Contribute to a dispersed, multi-location team and adapt to flexible working patterns
Experience / Skills Required
- Experience of collecting and evaluating data from diverse sources to produce or inform intelligence products
- Experience interrogating IT systems and databases; ability to prepare and deliver research summaries; enthusiastic and curious about finding information
- Good communication skills with the ability to listen and convey information effectively
- Ability to represent the Environment Agency professionally with a variety of partners
- Ability to use standard IT packages; retrieve information accurately
- Good team-working skills with an inclusive approach
- Ability to juggle tasks and administrative activities to support colleagues and customers
Additional Information
- Location is flexible with a mix of home and office working; occasional travel to Birmingham and Sheffield offices may be required
- Interviews via Microsoft Teams are expected in September 2025
