Overview

As an Intelligence Technical Officer in the Environment Agency’s National Environmental Crime Unit, you will build confidence and capability across area teams in intelligence‑led ways of working and the use of intelligence systems, to build a greater understanding of the Threat, Risk and Harm and drive a better approach to tackling environmental offending and protect officer safety. This is a new role within the Intelligence and Partnerships team. You will support area teams by providing Memex training, promote the use and benefits of Memex, and improve the quality of intelligence submissions.

Responsibilities include providing face‑to‑face training to area staff on the MEMEX intelligence system, providing support to enable area teams to submit intelligence and conduct searches, supervising intelligence logs to ensure a high standard of quality in submissions, creating entities from Memex submissions, providing regular reports on performance and feedback, ensuring high standards of quality of intelligence submissions, and other duties commensurate with the role.

You will be comfortable working in a dispersed team with flexible working patterns, including home and office arrangements. Travel to Birmingham and other offices where staff are based will be required on occasions. Responding to incidents is a central part of the role and may attract an additional payment and full training, with alternative working arrangements available to support your incident role.

The Team

The Intelligence Team manages and develops all criminal intelligence for the Environment Agency. The team builds and maintains strong relationships with partners to drive an intelligence‑led approach to tackling environmental crime and to meet customer needs.

Experience and Skills Required

We are looking for self‑motivated and proactive applicants who can demonstrate the following:

  • A good understanding of intelligence and intelligence systems
  • An ability to advocate for an intelligence‑led approach and embed it across teams
  • Excellent influencing skills, ensuring Memex use is the norm and safety checks are mandatory
  • Ability to build strong, effective relationships
  • Ability to create and deliver engaging, effective and inclusive training
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to give feedback on ways to improve intelligence submission performance
  • Strong self‑management and organisational skills
  • Great teamwork to support colleagues in achieving common goals

Additional Information

You will need to be comfortable with working in a dispersed team. Location is flexible with a mix of home and office working, but travel to Birmingham and other offices will be required on occasions. Interviews will be via Microsoft Teams and expected in October.
