Salary: £67,170 - £87,264 (including allowances) plus Civil Service benefits including 27% pension contribution. Salary is location- and skill-dependent at interview. Flexible, hybrid working from London, Cardiff, Darlington, Belfast, Birmingham, Salford and Edinburgh.

About the Role

This is a technical and strategically critical role within the Technology portfolio at DBT, overseeing a large and complex platform that supports both internal and external services. You will lead the transformation of the DBT Platform, ensuring the platform is robust, secure, scalable and efficient. You will own the roadmap to achieve this vision, aligning with the department's digital transformation goals. This requires collaboration with technical architects, engineering leads, cyber security and platform users. As part of the Product and Delivery Leadership Team, you will shape how teams work across DBT, bringing experience of technical operations and leading platform teams. You will work with colleagues across DDaT to understand future needs and help teams validate and deliver against them. You will also communicate your team\'s work to ministers and senior Civil Service leaders, bringing clarity, insight and impact to discussions. This is a role requiring experience with cloud-hosted platforms, DevOps, automated testing and deployment pipelines, and performance metrics such as DORA. AI literacy and understanding of emerging technologies are needed to guide innovation and resilience across the platform. A proven track record of leading large-scale platform operations and, ideally, infrastructure products, is essential for ensuring stability and strategic alignment with organisational goals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the transformation of the DBT platform to ensure long-term resilience and scalability
  • Deliver a future-state platform while maintaining stability and continuity of existing services
  • Develop and own a compelling product vision and roadmap, balancing user needs, technical capabilities and business value
  • Champion agile delivery and DevOps culture across multiple teams, embedding modern engineering practices
  • Represent the platform at senior boards, providing clear, strategic updates and influencing decision-making
  • Lead, coach and develop a team of experienced product managers, fostering a culture of high performance and continuous improvement

Essential Requirements

  • Proven experience leading platform and/or infrastructure products at scale
  • Strong technical literacy, including cloud-native architectures, DevOps practices, and large-scale web operations (SaaS/PaaS)
  • Experience engaging with diverse stakeholders, including senior levels, and users to identify shared needs and priorities
  • Experience in agile methodology and applying an agile mindset in fast-paced environments with iterative delivery
  • Experience developing and communicating product strategy to secure funding, including business cases and translating technical concepts for non-technical audiences
