Intro: We’re looking for a Legal Counsel to help deliver our UK productive assets strategy. This permanent position is based in London with hybrid working.

Who we are: Railpen is responsible for the safekeeping and investment of around £34 billion in assets and the administration of several pension schemes, including the Railways Pension Scheme, one of the UK's largest and longest established pension funds. Our heritage of looking after the pension needs of the rail industry and its employees gives us our name and our unique outlook on how we serve our members.

The Role: As Legal Counsel, you’ll provide expert legal support across a diverse range of investments and projects, from infrastructure and private equity to capital markets and regulatory initiatives. You’ll work closely with investment teams and external partners, negotiating documentation, managing legal risk, and ensuring compliance. This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Applicants must have the legal right to work in the UK.

The Person: We’re looking for a qualified lawyer with 2–4 years’ post‑qualification experience, ideally gained in an in‑house environment. You’ll have a strong transactional background covering M&A, partnerships and joint ventures, fund investments, and proven ability to negotiate legal documentation and advise on regulatory matters. Expertise advising financial institutions and infrastructure sector experience would be beneficial. Experience working collaboratively with diverse teams and engaging confidently with stakeholders is essential. You’ll be proactive, curious, and eager to develop new skills. Strong communication and project management abilities are a must, along with a culture of risk awareness and a commitment to compliance and teamwork. Our values of integrity, community, and alignment guide our behaviour and help shape our relationships.
