Overview
As a Principal Civil Engineer, you will provide technical leadership and guidance to a design team in the delivery of water and wastewater projects. The role involves detailed technical analysis, financial project management and ensuring project delivery. You will lead schemes, working with Project Design Leads and stakeholders to ensure delivery, value for money and innovation in the process. Southern Water are looking for an experienced Principal Civil Engineer to join the Water/Wastewater Infrastructure Civil team based in Falmer, Brighton on a full-time basis.
About You
You will be a leader of the team with a clear understanding of roles within the team and the ability to work cooperatively with other teams to achieve business aims. The role suits someone with strong critical thinking, empowered to make decisions and drive resolutions. You will be solutions-focused and adept at identifying and resolving complex engineering issues, proactive and exhibiting a high level of initiative.
You will be responsible for developing and maintaining projects in accordance with corporate health and safety, environment and quality standards, and ensuring the project team complies with such standards as you provide technical guidance and leadership. As a good communicator you will liaise with stakeholders, negotiate and influence senior internal and external stakeholders. We are particularly keen to hear from people who are excellent communicators, able to present and articulate technical ideas to both technical experts and lay people.
Responsibilities
- Lead a highly skilled design team on water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
- Perform detailed technical analysis and decision making to drive project delivery.
- Manage financial aspects of projects and ensure value for money.
- Collaborate with Project Design Leads and stakeholders to align delivery with objectives and innovation.
- Provide technical guidance and leadership to the project team in accordance with health and safety, environment and quality standards.
- Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, negotiating and influencing as required.
Requirements / Qualifications
- Experience in Water/Wastewater Infrastructure and Civil Engineering.
- Strong critical thinking with ability to make decisions and drive resolutions.
- Excellent communication skills; capable of presenting and articulating technical ideas to both technical experts and laypeople.
- Proactive, with initiative and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work in a hybrid office/remote environment and manage priorities across multiple projects.

Other Information
Role will be full-time Monday to Friday with a hybrid approach between the Falmer office and home. Flexible working requests will be considered where possible. Our customers are at the heart of what we do, with 24/7 incident support in place to resolve issues quickly and efficiently.
