Job Description

Join WSP as a Principal Mechanical Engineer (Energy) to lead mechanical design across renewable energy projects and contribute to landmark initiatives worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design from concept to construction for a wide range of energy projects, including conventional power plants, waste-to-energy facilities, industrial sites and carbon capture schemes.
  • Prepare calculations, equipment specifications and data sheets for turbines, compressors, pumps, pressure vessels and heat exchangers.
  • Collaborate with process, piping and instrumentation engineers to develop flow diagrams, P&ID and 3‑D plant layouts.
  • Engage vendors to develop equipment packages, review technical evaluations and support plant integrity on operational assets.
  • Support bid development, value engineering and detailed design for multi‑disciplinary proposals.
  • Assist in troubleshooting mechanical and plant integrity issues during operation and maintenance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer (or working towards IEng/CEng) and member of a relevant engineering institute.
  • Postgraduate experience in power generation or oil & gas, with exposure to fuel‑cell, carbon capture or low‑carbon technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of national and international codes and standards for plant equipment and piping.
  • Experience in pressure‑vessel and pipe‑stress design, and in working with 3‑D plant models.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, MathCAD and scheduling tools; ability to perform detailed engineering calculations.
  • Familiarity with EPC contract environments and with operations and maintenance (O&M) or asset‑integrity processes is highly advantageous.
  • Location is flexible across WSP’s UK office network.
