Overview

Senior Advisor - Future Agriculture - Environmental Land Management (ELM). The Environment Agency is reforming agricultural policy and spending, moving from the CAP to ELM schemes. ELM schemes support farmers to provide public goods in return for public money, incentivising water, soil, and biodiversity outcomes alongside food production. The role involves influencing the design and delivery of incentives within the wider context of government reviews and organisational response to reforms, to help grow a resilient and productive agriculture sector and realise EA2030 strategy and targets for water, environment and climate.

The Environment Agency ELM team seeks dynamic, strategic thinkers to shape the future of ELM, particularly the delivery of Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier (CSHT).

Responsibilities

  • Deliver key CSHT products for the Farming and Countryside Programme and contribute to continuous improvement in scheme design and delivery.
  • Provide advice in meetings, manage commissions, and oversee programme milestones.
  • Identify future risks and resource requirements; work across multiple teams and organisations with senior leaders to articulate a scheme that delivers outcomes.
  • Engage with Defra, delivery bodies and the agriculture sector to achieve consistency and better collaboration among organisations.

The team sits within the Nature & Place Directorate, part of the National Agriculture and Land Team. We work in an agile, fast-paced, flexible and collaborative environment, with a focus on reducing travel through smart tools. Experience / Skills Required

  • Experience of Agriculture and working with Defra and other statutory bodies is essential.
  • Politically aware with excellent communication and networking skills.
  • Ability to interpret/evaluate evidence to propose risk-based solutions for challenging problems.
  • Ability to prioritise and deliver complex work; a self-starter who develops and advances ideas.

Other Details

You’ll have an incident management objective in your development plan. Location is flexible/hybrid within England; some travel and overnight stays may be required.
