Senior Advisor - Future Agriculture - Environmental Land Management - 31666

England is undertaking the most significant reform of agricultural policy and spending in decades, moving from the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to the Environmental Land Management (ELM) schemes. The Environment Agency is seeking a dynamic, strategic thinker to contribute to the design and delivery of ELM schemes, including Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier (CSHT), and to advise across Defra, delivery bodies, and the agriculture sector.

Overview

The Environment Agency’s Nature & Place Directorate, part of the National Agriculture and Land Team, works with government, statutory bodies and industry in an agile, fast-paced, flexible and collaborative environment. We aim to deliver outcomes that support water, environment and climate targets and align with EA2030 strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advice in meetings, manage commissions, and oversee programme milestones for ELM, with focus on CSHT.
  • Identify future risks and resource requirements; work across teams and organisations with senior leaders to articulate schemes that achieve outcomes.
  • Influence the design and delivery of incentives within the wider context of regulatory reform and environmental objectives.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of the CSHT and related farming and countryside programmes.

Experience / Qualifications

  • Experience of Agriculture and working with Defra and other statutory bodies is essential.
  • Politically aware with excellent communication and networking skills.
  • Understanding of environmental sensitivities related to agriculture sector reform.
  • Experience interpreting/evaluating evidence to propose risk-based solutions for challenging problems.
  • Ability to prioritise and deliver complex work; self-starter who develops and advances ideas.

Location, Travel & Working Pattern

EA Office base location is flexible/hybrid in England; some travel/overnights will be required. We use smart tools to stay connected and reduce travel.
