Overview

Applications are invited for a Senior Biomedical Scientist post within the Haematology Department to support the Haemostasis team within the Department. Oxford is a large tertiary teaching hospital with a Trauma Centre, a Cancer Centre and a wide variety of specialist services, several of which have their own unique Haematology requirements. The Department operates across multiple sites (Haematology Laboratory at the Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford site; Haematology Lab, JRH; Haematology Lab, Horton site) and is UKAS 15189 and HCPC accredited in Oxford and Banbury. The Trust is committed to research and the successful candidate would be able to contribute.

The candidate must be HCPC registered as a Biomedical or Clinical Scientist.

The department undertakes a high volume of routine testing (approximately 700–750,000 FBCs). The Haemophilia and Thrombosis Unit is one of the oldest and largest in the country, with a commitment to service and R&D, presently equipped with Sysmex CN equipment on four sites. The department has recently implemented a new pan S4 Network IT system.

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country, providing a wide range of general and specialist clinical services and hosting medical education, training and research across four hospitals: John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington, and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

The Trusts values are Delivering Compassionate Excellence, focusing on compassion, respect, learning, delivery, improvement and excellence, and are reflected in patient care and professional relationships.

Responsibilities

  • To supervise/organise staff/work within section/area of expertise, ensuring work is completed within acceptable timescales and coordinating the training of all levels of staff within the section.
  • To perform, analyse, interpret, document and report both routine and highly complex laboratory investigations of a highly specialised nature commensurate with the professional grade, impacting directly on patient care.
  • The postholder will exercise autonomy within professional and managerial boundaries and will be required to verify and validate completed work.
  • To liaise/cooperate with hospital clinicians, other healthcare professionals, suppliers/manufacturers and their agents, patients and their representatives.
  • Participate in the strategic development of the section and deputise for the line manager in their absence.
  • Provide supervisory cross-cover in related sections of the laboratory when required, maintaining competency in these sections.
  • The work may include some weekend and evening duties, requiring a flexible approach to hours of employment subject to terms and conditions.

Haemostasis work and location

The Haemostasis service (as part of the UKAS-accredited Haematology Laboratory) processes approximately 300,000 samples per annum and provides a wide range of specialist testing associated with a large Haemophilia Centre. The laboratories perform a full repertoire of routine and complex coagulation testing and act as a referral centre for an extended region. Automation is based around 7 Sysmex CN analysers and Abbott track connectivity. The post is predominantly based at the Oxford Hospitals but may require travel to the Horton site; a flexible approach to working hours is an advantage. The Haemostasis service rotates predominantly between the Churchill and John Radcliffe sites.

Qualifications and experience

  • HCPC registered as a Biomedical or Clinical Scientist.
  • Experience with Haemostasis/Haemophilia and Thrombosis is desirable; however, experience with Sysmex analysers is not essential.
  • Keen interest in Haemostasis with demonstrated commitment through previous work and knowledge.

Additional information

The successful candidate will participate in the Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre on-call rota and deliver basic Haemostasis lectures at local Oxford Brookes University.
