Role

The Senior Design Manager ensures effective liaison across delivery aspects between the design team, project/site team, commercial, client teams and the supply chain. The Manager collaborates with the Design Manager and guides the consultant team and supply chain through package delivery to mitigate design risk and maximise value to the client/business.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the management of the entire design management process, ensuring design information is ready on time and meets the needs of the project.
  • Formulate, lead and implement a Design Strategy including Document Control, design meeting schedules, progress tracking, reporting and issues and risks.
  • Define the scope of services of each Design Team consultant through a Design Responsibility Matrix and ensure consultants’ appointments align with Bovis Protocols.
  • Drive the supply chain to the finished product by leading, motivating and managing external consultants at a Principal’s Level.
  • Manage risk connected with the design and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Liaise with and engage clients, stakeholders and wider client team to ensure the design continues to meet the brief and scope of work; translate and ensure compliance with technical standards.
  • Collaborate with designers, subject matter experts (SMEs), other professionals and stakeholders to develop efficient and effective buildings.
  • Lead a team of Information Managers and BIM Managers and maintain records and documents throughout the project.
  • Work with the wider Bovis project team to ensure change is captured and managed in line with contract conditions.
  • Audit all Design Stage Reports and action comments in the next design stage.
  • Add value through sensible and practical Value Engineering while maintaining the design’s essence and ensuring options are agreed and integrated.
  • Manage and record Lessons Learned and incorporate them into future projects and design stages.
  • Identify and capture Net Zero and Social Value performance of the designs.
  • Responsible for people management of direct reports.
  • With the commercial team, manage budgets related to design work.
  • Participate in the Bovis Design Management Leadership Team.
  • Support business sustainability goals, guiding clients and project teams toward sustainable and resilient design solutions.
  • Support diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.

Experience & background

  • Knowledge of public buildings design needs including potential enhancements.
  • Ideally RIBA 3 Chartered Architect
  • Thorough knowledge of the complete design and construction process.
  • Thorough knowledge of design and construction technical details.
  • Experience in the selection and procurement of designers on a competitive basis.
  • Good understanding of Modular, DfMA and industrialisation and how it impacts the design process.
  • Able to direct, and where necessary negotiate with, major design practices.
  • Previous experience as a design manager/architect on a significant new build project.
  • Experience and detailed knowledge of the RIBA Work Stages and their deliverables.
  • Experience and detailed knowledge of the Professional Services Agreements.
  • Experience and detailed knowledge of Designer Scope of Services.
  • Awareness of impact of both the BSA and CDM on the design process.
  • Experience in the creation and use of project control mechanisms.
