Senior Design Manager – Balfour Beatty plc

Lead design excellence across large‑scale complex developments, partnering with Project Directors, consultants and contractors to deliver innovative, buildable and commercially sound solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement design proposals, ensuring they meet customer requirements, budget constraints and gain client approval.
  • Brief and manage the Design Team, including M&E elements and any third‑party or novated design teams, verifying competence and resources.
  • Manage consultants and align design programme with the contract programme.
  • Provide advice on buildability to design and construction teams on all packages.
  • Liaise with statutory bodies and authorities (town planning, building control, services).
  • Ensure compliance with relevant building codes, regulations and safety standards.
  • Review, reduce or eliminate construction risks throughout designs.

Qualifications

  • Senior level experience delivering design services in a work‑winning environment and implementing design strategies.
  • Leadership skills to deliver design services timely with a customer and business sector focus.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, forming effective relationships under time pressure.
  • Experience leading or coaching a team is desirable.
  • Numeracy and bid/report writing requirement.
  • Hands‑on experience of delivering work‑winning bids timely.
  • Good working knowledge of BIM.
  • Experience within current procurement forms.
  • Relevant professional membership (e.g. RIBA, BIBSE, IET) recommended.
  • Valid CSCS card required.
  • Excellent IT skills; Microsoft Office essential.
  • Detailed knowledge of codes of practice and regulatory material applicable to the business stream.
  • Desire to continuously pursue innovation and development focused on the customer and business stream.
