This role sits within the National Environmental Crime Unit, part of our National Regulation and Monitoring Team. The National Investigations Team are a nationally dispersed team of Investigators working to bring the most serious and significant environmental offenders to justice. This is a hybrid working role with the need to travel for meetings and operational duties.

Responsibilities

  • Join our National Investigations Team as a Senior Environmental Crime Officer and work alongside Senior Investigation Managers and the Major Incident Room to lead investigations into the most serious and complex environmental crimes.
  • Coordinate and oversee all aspects of investigations, including identifying lines of enquiry, reviewing intelligence, raising and allocating actions, coordinating evidence gathering and interviews, and preparing case files for prosecution.
  • Engage with Partnership Organisations when appropriate and contribute to developing the team and the wider organisation.
  • Manage investigations that can be complex and varied in nature, often involving Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports and large-scale fraud.

Qualifications and experience

  • High level of attention to detail, hard-working, self-motivated with a strong investigative background.
  • In-depth knowledge of investigative legislation such as PACE and CPIA; excellent verbal and written skills; basic IT competency (Microsoft Word, Excel and Teams).
  • Knowledge of environmental crime, leading on serious criminal investigations, and the workings of a Major Incident Room is desirable.
  • Experience in driving, self-motivation, using initiative to find solutions, and building and developing investigation teams is beneficial.
  • Successful completion of SC and NPPV2 Vetting processes is required within a 6-month probationary period; a full driving licence is required.

Role specifics and working arrangements

  • This is a hybrid role, with flexible working from home and a local Environment Agency Office; travel for meetings and operational duties is expected.
  • Responding to incidents is a central part of the role; you may be required to have an incident role and be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. Additional payment and full training/workplace adjustments are available to support this role.
