Overview

The Environment Agency is looking for an experienced investigator to join our National Investigations Team as a Senior Environmental Crime Officer. You will be part of the National Environmental Crime Unit within the National Regulation and Monitoring Team, leading investigations into the most serious and complex environmental crimes. The role involves coordinating and driving all aspects of investigations, from identifying lines of enquiry and reviewing intelligence to coordinating evidence gathering, interviews, casefile preparation and prosecution. The team is nationally dispersed and works to bring the most serious environmental offenders to justice.

This is a hybrid role with home and office work, with frequent travel to meetings and operational duties. Responding to incidents is a central part of the role, with the possibility of an incident role and related training and adjustments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coordinate and progress investigations into serious environmental crimes, including complex cases involving Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports and large-scale fraud.
  • Identify lines of enquiry, review intelligence, raise and allocate actions, coordinate evidence gathering and interviews, and prepare case files for prosecution.
  • Work alongside Senior Investigation Managers and Major Incident Room to drive investigations and develop the team.
  • Collaborate with Partnership Organisations and other agencies as appropriate.
  • Provide training and support to investigative teams and contribute to the development of the team.
  • Be prepared to travel frequently and respond to incidents as required.

Qualifications and Skills

  • High level of attention to detail, hard-working and self-motivated with a strong investigative background.
  • In-depth knowledge of investigative legislation (PACE and CPIA), excellent verbal and written communication, and basic IT skills (Word, Excel, Teams).
  • Knowledge of environmental crime, experience leading serious criminal investigations, and familiarity with Major Incident Rooms are desirable.
  • Experience in building and developing investigation teams and driving improvements in efficiency and quality is beneficial.
  • Full driving licence is required.
  • Successful completion of SC and NPPV2 vetting processes within the 6-month probationary period.

  • This is a hybrid role; travel to Environment Agency offices and meetings will be required.
