We are looking for an experienced investigator to join our National Investigations Team as a Senior Environmental Crime Officer. You will work with our Senior Investigation Managers and the Major Incident Room to lead investigations into the most serious and complex environmental crimes, coordinating all aspects from identifying lines of enquiry to casefile preparation and prosecution.

This is a hybrid role with flexible working from home and an Environment Agency Office, with travel to meetings and operational duties as required. Incident response may be required with training and adjustments provided where needed.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, drive and develop investigative teams and complex investigations in the National Environmental Crime Unit.
  • Coordinate and oversee all aspects of investigations: identifying lines of enquiry, reviewing intelligence, raising and allocating actions, coordinating evidence gathering and interviews, and preparing casefiles for prosecution.
  • Collaborate with Partnership Organisations and, where relevant, with other agencies to support major investigations.
  • Contribute to developing the team and improving investigative processes across the unit.

Experience and Skills

  • A high level of attention to detail, be hardworking and self-motivated with a strong investigative background.
  • In-depth knowledge of investigative legislation (PACE, CPIA) and good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic IT competency (Microsoft Word, Excel and Teams).
  • Knowledge of environmental crime, leading serious criminal investigations, and workings of a Major Incident Room would be desirable.
  • Experience building and developing investigation teams and driving complex investigations.
  • Full driving licence. Successful completion of SC and NPPV2 Vetting within 6 months of appointment.

Role Specifics

  • This role may involve work with Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports and large-scale fraud.
  • Will be part of the National Investigations Team within the National Regulation and Monitoring Team.

  • Willingness to travel frequently for meetings and operational duties.
  • Respond to incidents as part of the role, with training and workplace adjustments provided; may attract additional payment.
