Overview
The Environment Agency is committed to an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We seek and value diversity and provide training and support to new starters, including equipment for your role as part of a comprehensive induction.
Role
Senior Environmental Crime Officer, National Investigations Team. You will work with Senior Investigation Managers and the Major Incident Room to lead investigations into serious and complex environmental crimes. You will coordinate all aspects of investigations—from identifying lines of enquiry and reviewing intelligence to allocating actions, gathering evidence, conducting interviews, preparing case files, and supporting prosecution.
Investigations can be complex and may involve Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports and large-scale fraud. This role offers the opportunity to bring your investigative experience into the environment crime arena and to develop the team and investigations further.
Team and Location
This role sits within the National Environmental Crime Unit, part of the National Regulation and Monitoring Team. The National Investigations Team is a nationally dispersed group of investigators focused on delivering justice for serious environmental offenders. See the Additional Information Pack for more details.
Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate major environmental crime investigations, including strategy development, evidence gathering, and case management.
- Identify lines of enquiry, review intelligence, raise and allocate actions, coordinate interviews, and prepare case files for prosecution.
- Work with Partnership Organisations and drive development of investigative teams and complex investigations.
- Respond to incidents as part of the role, including potential incident roles and business continuity support; training and adjustments provided.
Experience and Skills Required
- High level of attention to detail, hard-working and self-motivated with a strong investigative background.
- In-depth knowledge of investigative legislation such as PACE and CPIA; excellent verbal and written communication; basic IT (Word, Excel, Teams).
- Desirable knowledge of environmental crime, leading major investigations, and workings of a Major Incident Room.
- Proven ability to drive, motivate, and develop investigation teams, with initiative to find solutions.
- Successful completion of SC and NPPV2 Vetting processes within a 6-month probationary period.
- Full driving licence.
Working Arrangements
This is a hybrid role with working from home and the nearest Environment Agency Office. Frequent travel to meetings and operational duties is required. Incident response is a central part of the role and you may be asked to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support. Full training and workplace adjustments are available.
