Overview

The Environment Agency are looking for an experienced investigator to join our National Investigations Team as a Senior Environmental Crime Officer. We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual with a strong investigative background, good communication skills and a sound working knowledge of all aspects of running a major investigation. The role involves leading investigations into serious environmental crimes and coordinating across investigative teams and partner organisations.

Our team is part of the National Environmental Crime Unit within the National Regulation and Monitoring Team. The position is hybrid, with travel to meetings and operational duties expected, and full training and workplace adjustments provided as needed. Responsibilities

  • Lead and drive complex environmental crime investigations, coordinating all aspects from identifying lines of enquiry to casefile preparation and prosecution.
  • Coordinate evidence gathering, interviews, intelligence reviews, and action allocation in collaboration with Senior Investigation Managers and the Major Incident Room.
  • Manage investigations involving Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports and large-scale fraud; develop teams and progress investigations to outcomes.
  • Mentor and develop investigative teams; contribute to team development and share best practices.

Experience and Skills

  • High level of attention to detail, hard-working and self-motivated with a strong investigative background.
  • In-depth knowledge of investigative legislation such as PACE and CPIA; excellent verbal and written communication; basic IT skills (Word, Excel, Teams).
  • Knowledge of environmental crime and leading on serious criminal investigations; experience with a Major Incident Room is desirable.
  • Ability to work with initiative, drive solutions, and build/lead investigation teams.
  • Full driving licence required; willingness to travel as needed.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Successful completion of SC and NPPV2 Vetting processes within a 6-month probationary period.
  • A driving licence is required.

Additional Information

  • This is a hybrid role; you will work from home and your nearest Environment Agency Office, with frequent travel for meetings and duties.
  • Responding to incidents is a central part of the role; an incident role and availability to respond may be required, with potential additional payment and full training provided.
