The Environment Agency seeks a Senior Lawyer to join the Water Industry Enforcement Team within Legal and Audit Services. The role involves criminal proceedings and advising on enforcement of environmental requirements, including the imposition of civil sanctions and providing training on disclosure requirements and enforcement powers. The post offers ownership of an interesting caseload and a contribution to improving the performance of the Water Industry. Responsibilities

  • Conduct criminal proceedings and advise on enforcement of environmental requirements.
  • Advise on the imposition of civil sanctions such as enforcement undertakings and variable monetary penalties.
  • Provide training to staff on disclosure requirements and the use of statutory and enforcement powers.
  • Own an interesting caseload within the Water Industry Enforcement Team and contribute to improving performance in the sector.
  • Work in a role that may involve travel to court and other locations as required; role can be based at any main hub location; hybrid/home working subject to business needs.

Experience/Qualifications

  • Qualified solicitor, barrister, or equivalent (FILEX with rights of audience in criminal proceedings).
  • Ideally experience as a prosecutor or defence lawyer in complex criminal cases involving environmental breaches or other complex criminal/regulatory matters.
  • Sound knowledge of criminal law, practice and procedure; experienced criminal advocate with trial experience in the Magistrates’ Court; experience of preparing complex cases for trial and sentence in the Crown Court.
  • You may be a higher rights advocate, but this is not a requirement.
  • Understanding of the Environment Agency’s use of civil sanctions in place of criminal proceedings and ability to advise on appropriate regulatory responses to environmental offending.
