OverviewSenior Lawyer - Water Industry Enforcement Team – 31834Senior Lawyer position based in the Water Industry Enforcement Team within Legal and Audit Services. The role involves criminal proceedings and advising on enforcement of environmental requirements, including the imposition of civil sanctions such as enforcement undertakings and variable monetary penalties. You will provide training to staff on disclosure requirements and the use of statutory and enforcement powers, and contribute to improving the performance of the Water Industry.The role supports flexible working arrangements and welcomes information on preferred working patterns on your application.ResponsibilitiesConduct criminal proceedings and advise on enforcement of environmental requirements.Advise on the use of civil sanctions (enforcement undertakings, variable monetary penalties).Provide training to staff on disclosure requirements and the use of statutory and enforcement powers.Own an interesting caseload and contribute to the Water Industry’s regulatory performance.Travel to court and other locations as required; roles can be based at any main hub location in the Environment Agency.Participate in interviews during October 2025.Experience and qualificationsQualified solicitor, barrister or equivalent (FILEX with rights of audience in criminal proceedings).Ideally experienced as a prosecutor or defence lawyer in complex criminal cases concerning breaches of environmental legislation or other complex criminal/regulatory law.Sound knowledge of criminal law, practice and procedure; experienced criminal advocate with trial experience in the Magistrates’ Court; experience in preparing complex cases for trial and sentence in the Crown Court.Higher rights advocacy is not required but may be held.Understanding of the Environment Agency’s use of civil sanctions in place of criminal proceedings and ability to advise on appropriate regulatory responses to environmental offending.Other informationMarket Forces Factor allowance of £5,250 per annum.Combination of home working with attendance at the contractual office base, subject to business needs; based at main hub locations with travel to court and other locations as required.Interviews will be held in October 2025.Contact LASrecruitment@environment-agency.gov.uk for queries.We are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce and welcome flexible working patterns, including job share.Guaranteed Interview Policy to support disabled applicants meeting minimum criteria.Please note Environment Agency is not part of HM Civil Service; consult HR regarding continuous service eligibility where applicable.Additional informationArtificial intelligence may be used to assist applications, but all content must be truthful and from your own experience.
