Senior Mechanical Engineer – RPS, Newcastle Upon Tyne

RPS is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join its Building Services team in Newcastle. The role is hybrid, combining on‑site and remote work. It falls under the RPS Design Division, which delivers projects across residential housing, logistics, retail, aviation, healthcare, education, advanced manufacturing, data centres, energy and more.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Carry out detailed mechanical building services design on new build and refurbishment construction projects.
  • Assist senior staff with feasibility studies, concept and scheme design stages.
  • Attend design team meetings alongside other staff members.
  • Inspect and report on mechanical building services systems.
  • Undertake mechanical design work consisting of surveys, design, drawings and specifications for projects.
  • Work in conjunction with other design team members as part of the overall project team, ensuring that building systems meet legislative and health and safety requirements.
  • Utilise building services software for calculations.
  • Produce marked‑up drawings for CAD by others or direct CAD design drawings for issue.
  • Select and specify products, equipment and installation standards relating to mechanical services for costing and installation by contractors.
  • Attend project design meetings, technical meetings, value engineering workshops and risk workshops as required.

Who We’re Looking For

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience in designing mechanical systems from concept level through to detailed design (BSRIA BG6 Stage 4A), including ventilation, chilled water, comfort cooling, domestic hot and cold water, heating, above‑ground drainage and HVAC control principles.
  • Experience with Hevacomp / IES or equivalent.
  • Ability to view and interpret drawings in AutoCAD.
  • Understanding of Building Regulations Part L compliance.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel.
