Senior P&C Design Engineer – Power Transmission & Distribution

Balfour Beatty is recruiting a Senior P&C Design Engineer to join the Power T&D team UK wide.

The main function of the role is to engineer control and protection designs for electrical substation projects up to a voltage of 400 kV. The role also includes general, planning and procurement responsibilities for substation project delivery. We welcome full‑time, part‑time and job‑share candidates and offer flexible working.

Responsibilities

• General responsibilities
  • Ensure all duties comply with company quality, health & safety and environmental procedures and the Business Process Manual.
  • Contribute to the development and training needs of the design team.
• Planning responsibilities
  • Coordinate contract requirements with the Project Manager, customer, external suppliers and other Balfour Beatty departments.
  • Establish design content and resources to meet required timescales, and develop detailed engineering design plans.
  • Control, update and report progress throughout the contract life, providing estimates and highlighting potential resource problems.
• Procurement responsibilities
  • Specify and quantify equipment/material to achieve the greatest benefit to the company.
  • Report variations in the contract scope of work, indicating implications and proceeding only with approved variations.
  • Prepare instructions for all materials and special tools required for site and pass this information to the Project Manager.
  • Specify required test certificates and/or operations & maintenance manuals as part of technical specification or purchase order requisition.
• Design responsibilities
  • Identify relevant standards and customer requirements, ensuring compliance with national/international standards, legislation, and contract specification.
  • Ensure health, safety & environmental procedures are followed and produce risk assessments as required.
  • Examine contract documentation and establish the company’s scope of work, highlighting any differences with the tendered contract.
  • Attend and contribute to design review and contract close‑out meetings.
  • Initiate preparation of all required drawings and approve them for customer/sub‑contractor interface.
  • Prepare special test specifications and procedures for the Inspection and Test Department.
  • Receive “as‑installed” site drawings and liaise with other engineering services to produce accurate final records for the client.

Qualifications

• Education: HNC in Electrical Engineering or higher.
• Experience
  • Liaise with customers and suppliers.
  • UK industry experience, preferably with National Grid.
  • Overall design and specification of electrical power systems and components.
  • Perform calculations to demonstrate design integrity.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
